The existence of a tunnel under the Pavilion Gardens is well known in Brighton, though
most people are mistaken about where the tunnel leads. Most people think it lead to Mrs Fitzherbert's
house, unfortunately it didn't. The tunnel was created at a time when George was very
unpopular and sought to remain hidden from view as much as possible. The tunnel allowed
him to cross his estate without being seen, as he made his way to the stables.
The tunnel is about sixty metres long and was constructed in 1821 at a cost of £1783.
