Every two years we engage with the state of Indiana in a discussion about the
biennial budget process
and we talked to the state about the value of a Purdue degree and the value
of Purdue to the
economy of Indiana
and in the process of doing that
we have identified
this time around five
drivers that we think are emerging
and are going to play a a very large role in the future direction of Purdue
university in the way it interacts with the State of Indiana.
One of those drivers we talked about her last video message that was active
learning
we talk about the impact project in the fact that
new technology and new her ning research
is changing the way that we teach
season waiver students learn
large driver that uh...
we talk about quite a bit and we've been engaged in discussing for at least two
or three years and that is
the shifting funding priorities and shifting funding sources
universes specially public
research universities and langer and universities like produ
uh... that hat is happening at the state level
there are a lot of changes in the way that the state uh...
sets his priorities
the state is very supportive of higher education but there are many other
forces working
and on a limited uh... revenue stream
the we talked about the federal budget in fact that uh... we're about to enter
some very difficult times potentially
april that together and it was the basis for a decade or funding plan
i'd like to focus on three more drivers that
are emerging
over the past uh... several months to couple of years
uh... one of those drivers is the return of manufacturing and when i say that i'm
i'm being somewhat optimistic because if you look at the statistics in terms of
job losses
in the state of indiana and throughout the country
we've lost something like two hundred thousand manufacturing jobs last
ten twelve years
uh... and it we see no three jobs replaces it typically high-wage jobs
replaced with uh... service jobs are lower-wage jobs and that's resulted in a
gradual decline in the
median income for
losers
uh... in the state of indiana
and it's a national nationwide trend as well
but indiana having a strong reliance on manufacturing historically has
suffer uh... more than others
we're starting to see a rebound anna rethinking of the role of the state and
the role of a pretty university
developing our economy through manufacturing
but a different kind of manufacturing
it's not the though lower-wage lower skilled jobs that we're talking about
here we're talking about really high tech
manufactured we're talking about
maybe fewer jobs
but they're very upon a much higher skill sets required a greater
and deeper education required
and the opportunity in indiana to take advantage of our
uh... resources
human and otherwise to be a leader in the stint in the nation
in uh... developing a new manufacturing economy
you're hearing at the national level
a lot of discussion about
the need to
rebuild our manufacturing economy produ
wants to be in a position as quick to be in a position to help
indiana lead that
transformation
the other two drivers that are related
are the need for
skilled more
uh... in ginny rs technologists and scientists
contributing to our economy
and we've been challenged by the federal government
to generator to educate
something on the order of ten thousand more engineers and technologist
uh... in the u_s_
over the coming years
that would be an increased from about a hundred twenty thousand today two
hundred and thirty thousand now producing could do this by itself
but uh... we feel that a pretty big re especially for engineers in technology
students in our science students
is uh... of very high value we feel like uh...
if anybody's going going to do this in the u_s_ it ought to be produced a
keenly
the other riyaz
that are important to consider r_d_
changes in the way that industry is treating r_n_d_
uh... they have over years
started to the process of outsourcing research and development
looking for partners
and universities national labs or contract research companies
and that we can be
uh... major player in that and produce committed to
becoming a better partner we've always been strong in terms of their industrial
relation ships
but there's much more we can do
so that drivers one that we're really happy to answer and uh... we see great
opportunity going forward
of this reemerging uh... drivers and i just mentioned
we see a lot of synergy between us three and
it's playing right into produce strength
produ has always had strengths in those areas
and it
it were in a situation right now where the state the nation even globally
were uh...
did a lot of attention for will lead to respond and we want to be
uh... able to do so and all three of those areas
i'm here in the michael golden labs
where we have
of strength for many many decades in advance manufacturing
we have uh... make advanced manufacturing research going on in many
of our department's in discovery park
we have an opportunity to lean forward to build on those strengths to really
reinforce them
and to become a major player for the state of indiana in rebuilding and
strengthening its economy and at the nation as a whole
thanks for your attention
thank you for joining us
