The Importance of Preparing Food Hygienically and the Dangers of Not Following Safe Practices.
Well done Tom.
Now, wait everyone, don’t go! I know that we all know how to take care of ourselves
in our own homes, but did you know 80% of all food poisoning occurs in the home? Most
of these cases happen because people don’t handle food properly. Tom has made a list
of four simple things you can do to ensure you are safe and healthy at home.
Tom, food poisoning is caused by harmful bacteria; it multiplies and spreads across our foods
and surfaces. We then consume this bacteria and it can make us ill. An excellent way to
stop the spread of harmful bacteria is to wash your hands - wash your hands after visiting
the toilet.

Wash your hands after handling raw foods.

And wash your hands before touching cooked foods.
An important part of keeping food safe is keeping it refrigerated properly – fridges
should be set between one and four degrees Celsius. It is always best to keep raw meat
on the bottom shelf and keep raw and cooked meats separate. And check the use by dates
on food and do not use it past that date.
Cross contamination is when bacteria from one set of foods, usually raw food, transfers
to other foods. This is one of the major causes of food poisoning. But we can help stop it
by using different chopping boards for raw and ready to eat food, by cleaning knives
and other utensils thoroughly after use with raw food and always washing our hands thoroughly
after touching raw food.
Finally, proper cooking is an excellent way to kill bacteria in our food, like these three
here. By cooking your food, especially raw meat thoroughly, making sure that it is piping
hot throughout can kill these bacteria and ensure your food is safe to eat.
If you, like me and Tom, follow simple steps like the ones we have shown you today whenever
you are around food, you will help to reduce the chance of contracting food poisoning,
kill harmful bacteria and maintain and healthy, happy relationship with your food.
