• Hi! I'm Belinda • I own Belinda Lee Designs a embroidery
and sewing studio in Raleigh, North Carolina • I specialize in embroidered art
• Welcome to the first video in my series on turning special items into “Something
Else” • Today we’ll be turning our special item
into a Gallery Wrapped Canvas Artwork
• I bet you’ve got a special item hidden away somewhere
• That old cross stitch you did in college • Your first 5K finisher t-shirt.
• This symbol of your great accomplishment is just begging to be put on display.
• Get it out and let’s turn it into the special piece of art it was meant to be!
• The first thing you need to do is determine what size canvas you need.
• Today I’ll be working with this dress form design collection.
• I’m going to wrap this large design which I know is sized for a 14 x 11 inch canvas.
• I recommend you bring your art with you to the store.
• Lay it over a few canvas sizes to find the best look for your art.
• Your local craft store is a great source of canvases.
• I picked this one up from Michael’s using a 40% off coupon!
• You’ll also need a few other supplies: – Fusible web, I like wonder under
– Fusible fleece, • both need to be cut to the same size as
your artwork, not the size of the canvas • You can purchase these in the sewing section
of your local walmart and most local sewing stores
– An iron – A staple gun
• Position your art on top on the canvas and trim it down.
• Leave enough material to wrap to the back of your canvas.
• Place the wonder under, rough side facing down on the back side of your art.
• Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s directions in regards to heat and steam - No
Steam! • Once cool to the touch, peel the release
paper. • Center the fusible fleece over the canvas
• Fuse the fleece
to the front of the canvas. • I like to use a tailor’s ham or book
under the open part of the
canvas to make a nice ironing surface. • Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s
directions in regards to heat and steam - No Steam!
• Cut off the corners. • Carefully position the art over the fleece,
centering it as desired. • Fuse the art to the fleece. Again using
that tailor’s ham or book. • Flip you canvas.
• Pull each of the four corners up and fuse them down.
• Trim the corners where they overlap into the middle • Cut the material along each side, almost
to the corner. Leave just a bit connected. • I like to put my finger on the corner
to keep from cutting too far. • Tuck in the material near the corners
creating little pleat • Pull the edge of that pleat to the corner
of the canvas to create a clean flat look • Iron the side of the canvas, securing
those pleats. • You can cut back some of the fleece to
reduce the bulk. • Pull each flap in to the wood and iron
it down, making sure the corners are cleanly folded.
• Trim away any excess material • Re-press all the flaps of fabric to the
wood. • Give the sides one more good press
• You can add a few staples at the corners to make sure you’ve really secured things.
• VOILA! • That’s it! You did it!
• Okay! Next time we’ll be turning something special into framed artwork.
• Make sure you subscribe here or on my blog so you don’t miss it!
