THE LATEST-GENERATION DIESEL ENGINES BY PSA PEUGEOT CITROËN
PSA PEUGEOT CITROËN TECHNICAL CENTER CARRIÈRES-SOUS-POISSY
WHAT ARE DIESEL AND PARTICLE EMISSIONS, EXACTLY?
As you know, any combustion phenomenon
causes gas emissions which include:
NOx gases - nitrogen oxides -,
carbon monoxide,
or carbon dioxide - CO2,
which is responsible for global warming,
and particle emissions - soot.
In any combustion phenomenon,
whether it's lighting a fire, smoking a cigarette,
or cooking food,
you create particles.
WHAT ARE THE SOURCES OF FINE-PARTICLE EMISSIONS?
Regarding the sources of fine-particle emissions,
residences and the tertiary sector account for 40%, nationally.
Manufacturing industries account for 30%, nationally.
Road transport accounts for about 14% of these emissions.
"Road transport" includes goods transport,
public transport,
and all private vehicles, be they gas or diesel.
WHAT ARE THE INNOVATIONS DEVELOPED BY PSA PEUGEOT CITROËN FOR DIESEL ENGINES?
The particle filter was launched in a world first
by PSA Peugeot Citroën in 2000.
It collects the engine soot over 500-1,000 km.
After that distance, it automatically cleans itself.
The best image I can give you is a pyrolytic oven.
Your oven is dirty, so you turn up the heat,
and the soot and grease deposits are automatically burned off.
It's a filter which makes it possible to eliminate all the particles,
be they fine or ultra-fine -
all the particles emitted by diesel engines.
The filter is effective whatever the vehicle's state -
when the engine has just started up,
driving quickly on a highway, or slowly in an urban setting.
The other specificity of the particle filter with additives
is that it reduces the NO2 levels in the engine's NOx emissions.
A diesel vehicle fitted with a PF
emits fewer particles than a gas vehicle.
How does SCR work?
It's a technology in which urea is introduced
into the exhaust line,
then reacts with the nitrogen oxides,
creating mainly water and nitrogen, the main ingredient in air.
PSA Peugeot Citroën's innovation,
thanks to its PF with additives technology,
lies in placing the SCR ahead of the particle filter.
That combines excellent efficiency in terms of NOx elimination,
and reduced consumption, by about 2-4%.
PSA Peugeot Citroën decided to develop this technology
because it's the most powerful on the market.
WHAT ARE THE SPECIFICITIES
OF THE LATEST-GENERATION PSA PEUGEOT CITROËN DIESEL ENGINES?
In 2013, thanks to its optimized exhaust line,
the Group will commercialize diesel vehicles
in advance of the Euro 6 standards,
which perform as well as gas vehicles
while maintaining all their advantages
in terms of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
The Group is pursuing its efforts in R&D.
Our goal is to keep offering you Peugeot and Citroën vehicles
which respect the environment.
For example, the 2012 launch
of the sober and high-performing 3-cylinder gas engine blocks...
There was also the launch of the hybrid diesel,
which combines reduced emissions in cities
and low consumption on the highway.
Finally, in January 2013, the PSA Peugeot Citroën group
unveiled a new concept:
HybridAir,
to make hybrids available to as many people as possible.
