We are standing here in front of a speckbrett court. Speckbrett is a sport nearly exclusively
played in the city of Munster, and the near surroundings. Spreckbrett really is a source
of local pride here in Munster because not every city has a complete sport that has a
sport of its own. Everywhere else in Germany, no one has heard of it, and the people don't
play it. I have played spreckbrett for my whole life and I really love it. So, I will
never play anything else. It's played with tennis balls, and played with tennis shoes,
but the big difference is the racket. So, you have holes and different layers and quite
a long grip. This is what a racket looked like until the 1970s. It looks like a bacon
board, and actually it is a bacon board. In the old days, people stole it from their mothers'
kitchen to play because speckbrett is a one to one translation of "bacon board"... You
have a short grip, and there are no holes, and it is quite heavy. The aerodynamic is
very poor. The thing that it is out of wood is the only thing that is the rule for the
racket. You can make a racket like you want to. So, they invented, an engineer and a tennis
player, this racket in the 70s. Some players have longer grip or a shorter grip or more
holes or less holes but no one is playing anymore with this old racket style.
