Hi, this is Linda Lewis on behalf of Expert Village.com. Check out my website at www.keytime.com.
Do you need to have a class to learn to keyboard properly? There are many software programs
that are available but whenever you are working with the software program, it does not know
if you are doing things incorrectly. So the optimum is to be able to do a class. Just
like I have purchased many video tapes for aerobics but I find that I do better by going
to a aerobics class and I feel like watching the instructor being able to do it and having
the help of the instructor makes it a huge difference on my participation in doing my
aerobics class. So just like that, it is similar with keyboarding. When you have students in
a class you are able to help them very quickly and see things that a computer cannot measure
with just the input. There are several things I would be able to help this student with
their practicing is that she is watching the textbook and looking down. The first thing
I would do is be able to remind her to sit up properly so that she would be sitting up
and then another thing that she is doing is she has her wrists that are resting on the
keyboard. That is the most difficult thing for people to break the habit of and very
quickly if they are reminded to be able to have their hand flat, that is the most important
thing because when you have your wrist down that is where the carpal tunnel problem comes
in because you cut your circulation anytime your wrists are down. When she is looking
at the book, she is looking down at her hands as she is keyboarding and whether you are
typing from the textbook or from the monitor that looking down at the hands is something
you want to break. Touch typing means to type without looking so in a classroom or if you
purchase one of these for your home, which you can very easily, put this down for the
student so they would not be able to look at their hands when they are keyboarding.
So this is going to enable her to break the habit. At home she may not even be aware of
actually looking down. Now she is able to focus on the materials and realize that with
this sense of touch that she is able to be successful.
