“I grew up in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. My folks were involved with the science community
down there, which is really one of the leading areas of oceanography in the world, and I
really saw firsthand the interaction between peoples’ lives and the natural environment-
the science behind it – and that really motivated me to get involved with public service;
sorting out how do our public policies and government actions have an impact environment.
It’s really colored as I’ve gone forward. Over the years in Woods Hole I became exposed
to some of the early science about global climate change and the impacts that was going
to have and it really got me motivated to start thinking about how is this really going
to happen? How are we going to make transition? What are the economic opportunities in clean-energy?
What are the sensible types of approaches we should be taking and how do we really make
that environmental cause that’s so important marry up with some of the economic development
objectives that we have here in the state?”
