Now if you don't want to go with a design that's so locked in and specific, you can
go with a simple freehand design. Another good tool to have for cutting luminaries is
one of these hole cutters. It's a pipe, cut on a slant, so that you end up with a perfectly
round hole but you've got a nice, sharp edge to start that hole with. And you just push
it through the clay, give it a little twist, and pull it out and you've got your hole.
Now one design that I like to use over and over that's a very simple freehand design
is basically just a little kind of burst design, a sunburst or a starburst or something. And
I just take the knife and cut consecutively smaller wedges all the way around that circle.
And the possibilities on this are really endless. I mean, you can do any kind of thing you can
imagine. Just make sure that you keep the pieces that you cut out large enough. And
if you are trying to get a specific design that you leave points where the clay is connected
to keep that image on there, kind of like a stencil. And there you go. There's a really
simple freehand design.
