This is Anthony, and we're going to talk about how to become a professional photographer.
Now the word professional, is a word that I find very interesting. Because what, what
makes someone a professional? Be it, are you are a professional golfer? Are you a professional
doctor? Are you a professional plumber? I mean, in photography, especially as photography
is becoming more and more popular nowadays, probably because it's so easy for everybody
to do, via digital photography. Which in some ways, I think is great. I really do think
it's great. But, it just seems that everyone is a photographer nowadays. Which in some
ways, might be why you're watching these videos. And, I think that that's great. But when you
are a professional, for me that means that you make your living off of doing it. You
pay your bills, you pay your mortgage, you feed yourself, and your kids. So that, adds
a new level to what you do. And, it sort of adds a level on your organizational skills,
how you present yourself, and how you go about, you know, your professional life as a photographer.
So, the first thing you want to think about, when you want to become a professional photographer,
is, am I going to set my working day towards photography? And if you're not, that is totally
fine. People can make money, and pay the bills, using photography on the side. As a matter
of fact, I think almost every professional photographer I've ever known, has worked in
that capacity. Where they started doing it as a hobby. They started doing it to pay for
equipment, and then they started liking it. And then they started doing it full time.
And the key word, to what I just said, is liking it. Because I've also known, a few
professional photographers, that by the time they became professional, they didn't like
it so much anymore. Because it became their job. And that's what they have to do all day.
So, when they wanted to come home, the last thing they wanted to do, was the type of photography
that made them happy in the first place. So, that's just sort of my philosophy on becoming
a professional photographer. Now, if you meet all those criteria, you can make a lot of
money in becoming a professional photographer, and also do something you really love doing.
So, the key is to find what kind of photography you like. How you can be creative in it. How
you can make money in it. How you can market yourself. And, also have a lot of organizational
skills. I can't stress enough, how important that is. Because you will quickly see, how
much leg work is involved. Rather than just becoming a photographer who just takes pictures
behind the shutter. You might have to hire people to do all that leg for you. And those
situations are entirely possible. But the first thing that I like to put it in, is,
you start maybe as a hobby. You start doing photography to pay for your equipment. You
start doing a little bit more photography, on your free time, to pay for some bills.
And then from there, if all those things are working out for you, that's a great segway
into becoming a professional photographer. But to do it right from the beginning, to
say I'm going to become a professional, and that's the equipment, money, time, and then
just start. I think is probably the wrong way to do it. And that in my opinion, is how
to become a professional photographer.
