Kelsey Hammond (Craft Studio Coordinator): We were voted one of the 10 best kept secrets
by Mizzou. People just don’t know we exist until here a senior, then they’re like what,
why didn’t I know about this before? My name is Kelsey Hammond and I am the Craft
Studio Coordinator, so I organize everything that goes on here. I like to tell people that
were kind of a mullet, where it’s business in the front. So the first thing you see when
you come in is a gallery, which a lot of people are nervous about or they go is this the craft
studio, is this the right place, they think I don’t know if this is the right place.
So yes we have a gallery, business in the front, party’s in the back man. Party is
in the back. You go down a really long hallway and you see a classroom where we have paper
crafting and sewing, painting and drawing, all sorts of stuff like that. That’s where
all of our crafternoons take place every Friday from noon to four. Then as you keep going
there’s a glass studio, there’s a woodshop that has all sorts of power tools, we have
a huge ceramic studio which has ten pottery wheels and two killens, glazes are included
with membership. And then we have a screen printing room, and a processing room, and
a dark room. We’d like to say that we’re for the student who either loved art in high
school and still wants to do that, but there parents are like you got have a real job man
when you get out of school. So someone who wants to be a nurse, but is like I really
loved art in high school, you can come and use our studio. If you already kind of know
what you’re doing or you want to come and use the facility, you want to buy a membership,
then it’s $30 a semester, which is like $2 a week – if you think about it, that’s
pretty good. You get tons of stuff included in that membership. You can take a one night
class, like learn to make a sock monkey – it’s a $10 class. And then if you take a 5 week
class it’s going to be $60, 1 night per week for 5 weeks, 15 hours of instructions,
you learn to make an actual piece of pottery or something that’s a little more intense
and you leave with that skill. And with a class you usually get a free membership, when
you buy a 5 week class. You can come in anytime for the rest of the semester and keep working.
So we really want for people to feel like this is a giant hug. Our website is really
comprehensive, so that’s just craftstudio.org. We have all of our information up there; our
course schedule is up there.
