The purpose of the Writing Center is for students to come in and have a collaborative experience
on their writing. We work with all students at all levels of writing and all stages of
the writing process.
We see students from the Academic Advancement Program, ESL 3, 4, Academic Writing 5, 6,
all the way through English 2, the students from the various nursing programs. We work
with all students from the entire school system, so we don't limit who we work with and it
really just depends on the writing task at hand.
One thing we always suggest for faculty and staff to do is to put our link to the Writing
Center on their website or in their Blackboard. They can do that or they can also put it on
their syllabus and encourage students to come and try us out. What we have discovered is
that when students first come they enjoy the experience so much that they want to return.
So we are always looking for new students to try us out.
I think we really want students to know that it is more of collaborative experience. It
is not a place where we just fix papers. It is an opportunity for us to help students
and help writers know more about their writing and ways they can improve and grow. And to
also just be a better communicator is also a priority for us. We also will use, the students
can come in for non-school related writing projects if it is resumes or cover letters.
It can also be for people to come in for scholarship applications, for transfer applications. So
we look at a lot of personal statements, resumes, cover letters, we can do Power Points, really
anything that a student needs to communicate to another person is fair game for us to talk
about at the Writing Center.
