My Name is Doug Hubbell and today we’ll review the Celestron Travel Scope 70. I purchased
the Travel scope 70 for my niece. This scope would be a great gift for any child.
It’s packaged very well and within a few minutes you’ll have it assembled. It comes
with “The Sky X First light edition software. The outside of the box recommend 13 years
or older, I’ll be giving this to my nine year old niece. I’m sure this would be a
great scope for any child, provided there were some initial instructions, and warning
the child to never look at the Sun. This scope has a 400mm focal length, altazimuth mount,
full coated GLASS optics, not plastic lenses, 20mm and 10mm eyepieces. It also has an Erect
image diagonal, so you see images “right side” up, the finder scope of course is
“upside down”, which may confuse younger children. The finder scope’s alignment screws
are a little hard to adjust, but, it does the job.
The 70mm views are terrific! I was surprised how clear this scope performed. The 70mm dew
shield can be removed and while this package includes a lens cleaning cloth, however, with
coated glass lenses, it’s not a good idea to rub off the coated lens. But who cares?
A child will get tons of mileage out of this little scope! If they play around and have
fun, that’s great! This scope was only $59.95! Wow, That’s A lot of Cheap Fun!
There’s lots of room in the backpack to store the equipment. A nice zipped pouch can
store all of your eyepieces and diagonals. Soft padded straps with a mesh underside to
help keep you cool when hiking with this on your back.
The weakest part is the mount, lots of screws, untightening, and tightening to get your target.
If this mount had a slow-mo tracking ***, the travel scope 70 kit would be perfect!
I was able to see Jupiter clearly and I’m sure you’d be able to see Saturn and it’s
rings too. If you’re an adult and wanted to get your
feet wet with some casual observing, this is a great little scope. And for children
I don’t believe you could find a better starter scope. You could totally thrash this
scope and learn some basics. If you destroy it, you’ll only be out $60.
The Celestron 70mm travel scope comes with 1.25” focus tube. If you purchase this scope
and then become interested in astrophotography, you could use this 70mm scope as your autoguider
scope. I highly recommend this scope as gift for
anyone. Thanks for watching and please subscribe!
