So why exactly have we been lead to believe that we should always eat our vegetables?
And, how come a lot of emphasis is placed on green leafy vegetables?
Well, I’ve taken the liberty of condensing the information about green leafy vegetables to:
FACT #1 – They reduce cholesterol
FACT #2 – Some are chock full of vitamin K.
This vitamin helps in blood clotting, builds strong bones and prevents age-related conditions such as heart disease.
FACT #3 – They’re rich in the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin
which reduce discomfort from light, decrease the risk of cataracts, and increase the distance of sight.
FACT #4 – They have vitamin B5, also known as pantothenic acid.
Of course, all B vitamins help convert food into fuel.
Specifically, vitamin B5 helps maintain a healthy digestive tract,
utilize other vitamins and is critical in the manufacturing of red blood cells.
FACT #5 – They have calcium which is crucial in overall health including use in the nervous system,
muscles, heart, and bone. Got milk? Phppt...
Please. How about - got green leafy vegetables?
FACT #6 – According to the Journal of the American Dietetic Association,
a decreased risk of colon cancer. I don’t know about you,
but the less chance I have of ANY kind of cancer, the better.
Bearing all these facts in mind, why are people still not eating more green leafy vegetables?
It can’t be entirely from a lack of information, so
I think we can deduce the lack of green leafy vegetable consumption comes down to one of two things -
time and money. We can all agree putting on extra pounds comes easy,
especially when healthy options for on-the-go or busy lifestyles seem limited.
Fast food joints, gas station convenience stores, and local grocers offer everything imaginable,
but those choices may not be at the best interest of your waistline or overall health.
What if it didn’t have to be that way?
What if you could have a convenient healthy option that doesn’t kill your budget or waste time?
Enter the green smoothie, a healthy blend of green leafy vegetables, fruits and sometimes nuts.
This beverage is possibly the best way to funnel in all the valuable nutrients,
vitamins and minerals your body craves.
All you need is some produce, a blender, a sharp knife, and a cutting board.
For under ten bucks and ten minutes, you can have all the produce you need for up to four servings of green smoothies.
Ideally, green smoothies should be largely made up of green leafy vegetables with some fruit to tantalize your taste buds.
Eventually, when you grow to appreciate the taste of green leafy vegetables, you can increase the amount of vegetables to fruit.
The key to implementing green smoothies into your diet is to add one smoothie a day.
Ideally, you should add the shake at a time when you need a convenience food or a quick bite.
The green smoothie provides more nutritional value than anything you may find in fast food restaurants or convenience stores.
fast food restaurants or convenience stores.
The sweet part is you can make a green smoothie in advance and save it for up to 12 to 24 hours.
Though, I much prefer drinking a smoothie as soon as I make it.
A question bears worth visiting – will green smoothies help lose weight?
Yes, but only as a part of a well-rounded diet and exercise program.
Think of the green smoothie as an enhancement to your normal diet.
This beverage merely fills times you’d otherwise miss a meal or snack.
Not all smoothies are meal replacements, but they are certainly better than the alternatives of junk food or nothing at all.
Moderation is key in using green smoothies.
A smoothie should not be more than a third of your daily nutritional intake.
Relying solely on smoothies may wreak havoc on your system, so be reasonable with how much you drink throughout the day.
Be sure to talk to your family doctor before you change your diet or add green smoothies to your normal routine.
Green smoothies are not appropriate for everyone since people with specific medical conditions
and on medications may not be able to consume some produce.
In the coming weeks, I’m going share some of my favorite green smoothie recipes.
Not only will you get to see how I prepare them,
but you’ll also get deeper insight into how much it cost in time and money.
Seriously, no smoke and mirrors here.
This stuff is so easy, you’ll be kicking yourself for ever missing out on these tasty cold treats.
I’d love to know if you have any favorite recipes or what kind of questions you have about healthy green smoothies.
