Good evening, esteemed educators, families and friends.
In the movie Parenthood, the grandmother tells her granddaughter that
life is like a rollercoaster. To paraphrase it, she says sometimes it's up
and sometimes it's down. Or maybe even a little upside down at times.
It's scary at first, but the thrill and the enjoyment of the
ride make it worth doing. Isn't that the truth.
When I knew I wanted to teach, it was a quiet moment of yes.
I think that was the last quiet moment I had when I began this ride.
I've had my challenges, awakenings, and a new
moments of joy. It is all worth it. This
profession is my calling. It is my community, my
friends, my family. It is my "personal legend,"
as Paulo Coelho calls it in The Alchemist.
Aren't we fortunate to work with the future?
That idea is so powerful to me because one of my favorite quotes
by Gandhi asks us each to be the change we wish to see in the world.
I think I learn more from my students than they do each year
about compassion, grace, unconditional love
and how the power of education can change a person, a future
forever. What a humbling task to be charged
with. And I am grateful, indeed.
Thank you to my family and friends for being there on this coaster with me.
You're my constant sources of inspiration and love. I would like to recognize
my mom and my dad and my kids who have been there without question
and of whom I have the deepest love and respect for. I am
also blessed with an incredible mentor and principal, Laurie Elm.
I thank you all for what you have taught me. A heartfelt
congratulations goes out to the other Teachers of the Year. It is amazing
to be here with you. Thank you.
