[Community Partnership Award-Wendy Emmett]
>> Wendy Emmett is the parent point guard for the sports on campus program. [nice one.]
This voltunteer saw a need for students who arrive on campus on buses 2 hours before classes
begin and she filled that need.
>> A lot of kids, they don't have much to do before school, so they start to get into
misfit trouble or anything and it gives them a chance to go into the gym and just pretty
much let all the energy that you have when you wake up in the morning.
>> It's a volunteer program that we started about 5 years ago to provide some opportunities
for students to actively participate in the morning when there's little to do and kids
need some structure and it provides them a chance to become more active
and really participate in basketball and other sports that they potentially might not otherwise
be able to engage in.
>> It's a very very very important thing. People like Wendy and stuff and they take
time out of their day to give these kids a chance to do something and pretty much that's
a whole catalyst, kids becoming more social, being more outgoing and everything
so programs like this really allow kids to benefit in multiple ways.
>> I was just so flattered to hear, didn't even know I had been nominated. It's so nice
to be recognized for the efforts I not only participate in sports on campus here but I've
done a lot working with the leadership students and helping out with the
Parent-Teacher Advisory committee and it's just nice to feel a part of the community
and to be able to give back.
