A viewer asks, what is Blephoritis and what are the common treatments. Blephoritis is
an inflammation of the eyelids and it can be caused by many things and one of them is
bacteria. So what we do is keep the eyelashes and eyelids very clean to make sure that there's
no bacteria or build up of debris that can cause styes, plugging the oil glands and so
forth so you want to keep that area really clean. And one of the things that we do is
we use baby shampoo. There are also special shampoos that your doctor may prescribe for
you as well, but basically what you do is take a little bit of the shampoo and put it
on a washcloth or on a Q-tip and to be careful if you use a Q-tip because you don't want
to poke yourself in the eye. But basically what you do is you just clean right along
the edges of the eyelashes to keep it nice and clean and keep any bacteria from getting
on there. Sometimes the doctor will also prescribe ointments that are antibiotics to try to keep
that area free of bacteria as well. Sometimes it's very stubborn and you have to work at
it for a while to get it clear so you have to make sure that you see, if you do have
blephoritis, that you continue with follow up visits with your eye doctor to make sure
that the treatment doesn't need to be changed or adjusted.
