Me: I turned it on a little bit. Ok. You can go.
Papa: One day we wanted to ride horses so we got on-- she had a horse and I had a horse--
we rode to the South Hannah River down to this plantation.
Nana: I have a question.
Papa: Go ahead.
Nana: Were you first attracted to me or my horse?
Papa: Your horse.
Nana: Well after 45 years, I want you to know I was attracted to your horse and then you.
Just kidding.
Papa: Anyway, we were riding, and we saw this skunk. And she said, "Hold on, I want that
little baby skunk." I said, "No," and she said, "Yes," so I took a branch, and I catched
it and nothing happened. So I said, "Ride up and get a gunny sack from this plantation."
So she ran up on the horse and got the gunny sack. And I put it in and rode all the way back home, got into my drive, and
the thing exploded. And the horse ran up and I said, "Well, we might as well turn the skunk
loose." And we turned it loose and rode down to your mother's at the South Hannah River
and soon as we turned in, they said what's that awful smell and both horses and both
of us were all smelly. And
I had to burn my coat, and I'm sure she did too.
Nana: Well, that's his version, which is about 90% true, but . . .
Me: Do you wanna tell us the other 10%?
Papa: Yeah, tell us the other 10%
Nana: Well, we used to love to go horseback riding cuz when we didn't date "date" but
when he would come down to the old mill everybody has a song and our song is - lets sing it.
"Down by the old mill stream," and I was 15. And I was his-- not his queen but his princess -”or
so he told me. And so we would go swimming together with Luke and go horseback riding,
and he would say, "My horse is better than yours," and I would say, "My horse is better
than yours."
Papa: She had a nice horse.
Nana: He did have a beautiful polo pony a horse by the name of Talulah, and we had a
gorgeous chestnut by the name of Lightfoot.
Papa: Which was a desert horse.
Nana: No, it was beautiful that, it did not. Anyway, so one of our rides we went to
this old plantation and I had always heard that a little skunk would make a darling pet.
Right?
Papa: Yes.
Nana: And so I said, "I want that little skunk." He said, "You don't want a little skunk."
And I said, "I've always wanted a little skunk." And he said . . . I said, "Would you give
me a skunk?" And he was in love.
Me: I would give you the world!
Nana: He said he would if would get a gunny sack, so I went riding up to Ms. Herman's
plantation and got the gunny sack. He got
the little skunk. It was the cutest little stunk...snuck...skunk .
Me: Uh, well it did stink. It stunk
Nana: But it didn't let out
a single smell until we did get ready to go into the old mill drive and Papa's
Papa: ??????
Nana: No, we got pretty far. And but mama said that. This is what the 10% is. Mama said
she could smell us a block away, and they had no blocks out there, but she actually got sick, and we did have
to get rid of our clothes. And uh. But
I do have a question.
Me: You may ask.
Nana: And my question is. Would you today get me a skunk? Would you if I asked you today
would you love me enough . . .
Papa: No.
Nana: To give me another skunk.
Papa: I would not get you a skunk.
Nana: But may I add I would not ask for a skunk.
Papa: I'd get you a fishing worm.
Papa: I'd give em a fishing worm a t-bone.
Me: Cut.
Nana: Tell em. I can tell you he gave you his version when he saw me on the side of
the road, and I'll tell you.
Papa: Would you go ahead, sweetie.
Nana: I want to sit here next to me.
Papa: No.
Nana: Yes.
[Bickering]
[Laughing]
Nana: Well, you may need to hear this. I'm talking about when Pat and I were on the
side of the road.
Papa: I did. I told her that one.
Nana: I know, but that's not the truth.
Papa: What?
Nana: That's from your standpoint. Sit down, just for this.
Papa: Let her tell her version.
Nana: Honey, come on.
Papa: And I love you, and we will continue this another session.
Me: Tomorrow?
Papa: Maybe tomorrow.
Me: For my birthday?
Papa: Oh, yeah, for the birthday. Happy 15th birthday.
Me: To me.
Papa: I love you.
Me: I love you too.
