>>Theresa Bierer: Reducing emissions and discovering new, cleaner way to operate is more than a
good idea, it's necessary for future generations. That's the consensus after a recent group
meeting of university and college presidents in Washington D.C.
>>John Haeger: That in the absence of significant actions by governments all over the world
we will slowly begin to erode the quality of our environment everywhere in the world.
The presidents of American universities were really pressing hard to begin almost a grassroots
effort to make recommendations to policy makes for change.
>>Bierer: There are three hundred signatories on the American college and university presidents'
climate commitment so far. Haeger signed on early, putting him in the group's leadership
circle, as a representative of positive climate change.
>>Haeger: In many ways Northern Arizona University sits at the forefront of much of this because
we as a campus have been obviously in terms of our academic programming but also our building
of buildings, so we have been environmentally conscious for a long time. So I think we sit
in a good place in Flagstaff. >>Bierer: Northern Arizona University's soon
to be completed Applied Research and Development facility includes a 1.3 million dollar solar
project and many other energy saving features. University administrators are also evaluating
proposals from a group of students and faculty who spent last semester coming up with plans
to help reduce the university's footprint. Several of these ideas and others could be
implemented in the short term.
