Earlier today, the White House announced that Tennessee will be one of the very first states
to receive a waiver from the No Child Left Behind law.
What's that mean? Well, that means that for thousands of hard working teachers who every
day who are going to work in the classroom and who's students are showing real improvement
that achievement will be rewarded and recognized. It means that Tennessee is seen across the
country as a real leader in education reform and the federal administration and others
recognize that the specific steps that we're putting into place really can make a difference
in closing the achievement gap for our students. What does it not mean? It does not mean we're
lowering our standards in Tennessee. It means we're adopting Tennessee specific standards
which talk about student achievement and recognized improvement where it is happening.
We in Tennessee are very serious about continuing to make certain that our students are prepared
for the workforce and prepared for life and we're grateful for those teachers who help
that to happen every day.
