>> Miles There have always been for me just fascinating students here at Temple. Just
students who walk into your office with talents and expectations and motivations that I don't
think you'd see in other places. So I love giving students the biggest picture possible
of American literature and fitting the pieces together. My specialty is American literature
and American culture. I came in 1969 and was an American literature specialist. The American
Studies program was founded soon after I came and I became involved with that and I remained
involved with it all these years. And what I see at Temple is a kind of flexibility,
an attitude of encouragement toward faculty. There are no narrow channels that we are looking
for in faculty. We're happy to see people grow and expand and I think most important
to me, it's been a place where I've been able to grow as a teacher and a scholar. I knew
I'd be happy here, but I didn't expect to settle here permanently as I have so that's
kind of been my history.
