>>Julia: Hi! I’m Julia
and here in America’s Test Kitchen we use lots of fresh herbs
and what could be fresher than growing your own?
Not to mention the ease of being able to snip off exactly what you want, when you want it.
Our friends at Miracle-Gro have some great tips about growing herbs.
When planting your herbs
keep in mind that they need at least 6 hours of sunlight a day.
Chives, cilantro, oregano and rosemary love even more sun.
Shady spots do well with mint, bee balm and lemon balm.
When you are ready to pick your herbs
only harvest what you need
and never more than a third of the leaves at a time.
For the best results, do this in the morning.
To use some of your own home grown herbs
try our terrific recipe for perfect herb vinaigrette.
>>Narrator: This easy herb vinaigrette is a simple sauce used to dress greens.
Start by coiling a kitchen towel
and placing it under a medium sized non-reactive bowl to prevent slipping
Add the wine vinegar,
finely minced shallot, mayonnaise, mustard,
salt and pepper in a small bowl.
Whisk until milky in appearance and no lumps of mayonnaise remain.
Next, very slowly drizzle oil into the vinegar mixture, whisking constantly.
If pools of oil gather on the surface, stop the stream of oil
and whisk the mixture until well combined.
Add fresh herbs just before use.
Toss with greens and serve immediately.
