Hello! My name is Jessica Tipton, and I’m the evening/weekend librarian at Billington
Library. I’m here to talk to you about some of the resources we have available for you,
as faculty, as well as for your classes here at the college. We’re here to support you
and work with you – you just have to let us know how we can help. You can reach us
in person at Billington Library, online at library.jccc.edu, or by going to our Ask-A-Librarian
site which has all of the other ways you can reach us.
I, or the other librarians, can talk to your classes about the best ways to do research
or approach an assignment, either in your classroom or in the library classroom. We’re
very willing to travel to your class if that’s more convenient for you. We had one librarian
go all the way out to Lawrence to work with a class last semester. I, myself, teach a
number of classes during the year. We try to make sure that classes are interactive
and that students have time to practice using resources while they’re in the library.
If you don’t have time for a library visit there are other ways we can help. We can create
research guides, or LibGuides, to give students a starting place for their research. We can
also provide you with links to use within ANGEL.
Let’s take a look at the library website. We’ll go to library.jccc.edu.
I can’t talk about the library without mentioning all of the wonderful resources we own. We
have thousands of books and DVDS, and access to over 100 research databases. You and your
students can access any of our online resources 24/7 with your JCCC usernames and passwords.
Here is our catalog search where you can look for books. Click on the audio-visual tab to
search for DVDs. To get to the research databases, you can
either click on the articles tab or click on Databases on the left. The databases will
connect you to articles, books, videos and more.
To get to the LibGuides I mentioned, click on research guides on the left, just underneath
our link to our Ask-A-Librarian site. Here’s an
example of one LibGuide I created for an Ethics and Criminal Justice class. The professor
and I met to discuss the assignments for the course and then I collected and organized
the website of resources for her class. This was a resource all students used while they
were completing their research papers for the class. I made sure to include both print
and online books, links to databases so that students could find articles for their research,
DVDs as well as credible websites. If there’s something you want that we don’t
have – just let us know! We can borrow materials through interlibrary loan or try to purchase
them and add them to our own collection. We also have a course reserve system if you’d
like to put items on reserve for your classes. We can hold items at the library or create
online reserves for some items so that students have 24/7 access.
The librarians are here to support and collaborate with you. Please contact us at any time and
let us know how we can help!
