Hey, nerds, gather around the TV or as they say in the UK,
the loo.
Because we are about to discuss the biggest event on the nerd calendar.
It's time to recap this year's
San Diego Comic-Con!
(THEME MUSIC PLAYING)
Hello, everybody, I'm Chris Hardwick
and I'm a person who's on this show.
And this is The Nerdist,
the lookable version of my well-regarded internet podcasting thing.
And to my immediate front and right
are my adorable co-hosts Jonah Ray and Matt Mira.
-Hello. -Hello.
-Hello. -Hi.
-How are you. -Hi, you're Matt.
-Jonah. -Jonah.
-Great, nice to meet you. -Yeah.
-Nice to see you. -Yeah, it's good. Nice pad.
They've actually never made eye contact before today.
This is the first time.
He's a good-looking guy, can't believe I make fun of him so much.
He is nice. Seriously. I know.
Normally I try to keep 'em isolated. (LAUGHS)
Mike Phirman over there
is crammed into the space never intended for a band of any type.
He's the maker of our music,
the one and only Mike Phirman and his band,
Mike Phirman and the I Didn't Read The Chapter In Chris' Book
Where He Say's "Don't Be A One Man Band" Band.
We have just come back from Comic-Con,
San Diego Comic-Con,
I mean, first of all let's dispel the... A lot of people say,
"Are you going to Comic-Con?"
It means the San Diego International Comic-Con.
There are tons of Comic-Cons all over the country.
But this one in San Diego, because it's the largest,
is typically known as Comic-Con.
That's why they kind of refer to. SDCC, we call it.
It's the Kleenex of tissue.
HARDWICK: Yes.
And it was just a really nice year.
I got to moderate Walking Dead,
and of course the Doctor Who panel.
-Uh...and... -AUDIENCE: Ooh.
-And... Whoa! -(LAUGHS)
BOTH: (SING-SONGY) Who!
Ooh!
PHIRMAN: A Musak version of the theme.
(ALL LAUGH)
That's actually just the cute Japanese version
of Doctor Who . ALL: (MIMIC) Doctor Who.
-Who. -Koi.
What I like is all the locals who try to embrace it.
And they just get...
Like, I went to a Starbucks and everyone there just had
a really bad, fake Spider-Man shirt on.
HARDWICK: Right.
And they have like just this real bad cardboard cut-out
that just looks like a frumpy Spider-Man.
Yup.
They're like, "Hey, we're Spider-Man -ing it up at Starbucks."
-HARDWICK: Yup. -"We get ya."
"We get ya, it's just the..."
(WITH BRONX ACCENT) Ya gotta speak to these nerds-es language, ya see.
RAY: Yeah.
Then the dollars are going to come rolling in.
(LAUGHING)
That character was Keith Starbucks.
Keith Starbucks.
The small proprietor of Starbucks in San Diego.
(LAUGHS)
You know, drug-resistant viruses aren't the only thing
you get exposed to at Comic-Con.
You also get to see amazing artists drawing their characters
right in front of your eyeholes
and we don't want you guys to miss out on that unique experience so
we invited one of those incredibly talented artists to join us today
to draw me, Matt, and Jonah.
Please welcome DC Comics' artist,
Ryan Winn.
So, uh, have you started yet?
-I have started. -HARDWICK: And what do we have so far?
So far I'm just doing a basic laying out the set.
-Okay. -I'm getting the set
and all the trinkets and the goodies and getting you guys placed and...
Are we going to be in any kind of action poses?
-No, I think we're gonna be... -I've got you kind of flailing your arms a little bit.
With lasers coming out of them?
There can be, um...
Depends what stories you tell too.
If you tell more laser stories...
I tell laser arm stories, Ryan Winn.
Then, if your guns are loaded...
I tell stories about abs.
I have you with your shirt open, flexing your abs.
-Yeah, just get that in there. -(HARDWICK LAUGHS)
I'll give you five bucks to make him look like (BLEEP)
(ALL LAUGH)
-You mean like Jonah? -(LAUGHS)
You'll have to give me 10 'cause he already gave me five to make you look like (BLEEP)
HARDWICK: Oh, man!
-What's up, buddy? -He didn't really do that.
(ALL LAUGH)
He is responsible for some of those popular franchises know to nerds.
Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the stage,
Mr. Damon Lindelof.
(PHIRMAN PLAYING)
Damon, nice to see you.
PHIRMAN : # Damon Lindelo f #
Damon Lindelof, co-creator of Lost, writer of Prometheus,
writer of the Star Trek franchise.
It is wonderful to have you here.
A pleasure as always.
-MIRA: Welcome back. -So it's blazers on this side?
-This looks like... -(LAUGHING)
-This really looks like it's a... -Class warfare.
It's a Republican and Democratic debate, right now.
Why can't we just feed all the babies
and let the other people come in the country, I don't understand.
If these flannel-crats would understand that their plans are...
I just say we just make it so Urban Outfitters is for everybody.
Yeah.
Now, I saw you... I ran into you last night,
I hadn't seen you for all of Comic-Con
but I saw you at one of the parties at the end.
And you seemed to be having a nice time at Comic-Con this year.
Yeah, it was a relaxing con.
I didn't overdo it.
I think it's a little bit like the buffet at Sizzler.
-HARDWICK: Yeah. -If you will.
Wait, wait, I don't understand how you can overdo it at the buffet at Sizzler.
Yeah, you just go to the buffet and that's overdoing it.
You see, you just put too much on your plate
and in Con's past I think that
I just wanna go to everything and
this year I was just a little bit more...
I'm going to hit a few things and I'm gonna hang out with people
and have lunches, moderate a few panels,
check out a couple of others, and drink.
What did you moderate?
I moderated the Phineas and Ferb panel.
-Okay. -Nice.
Phineas and Ferb, they're awesome.
And then I did this panel at Nerd HQ with my friend
Seth Grahame-Smith who wrote Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.
The Community panel, I heard, crushed.
I heard the Firefly panel was insane, as well.
What did you see, did you see anything that you liked?
I caught the Fringe panel this morning, which was awesome.
And a little bit of the Marvel panel yesterday.
So, Downey doing his thing was rad.
Comic-Con for me is still super fun
but I have a different perspective on it now because it's all work.
-You're management now. -Well, a little bit.
But it's still really fun work.
Like, I wouldn't have gotten into the Warner Brothers/ Legendary panel
unless I'd been moderating it.
I got to see the Godzilla footage.
And the Man of Steel footage.
-And Pacific Rim. -Pacific Rim.
Which looked phenomenal.
And The Campaign which looked super-hilarious
with Zach Galifianakis and Will Ferrell.
And then The Hobbit.
Peter Jackson's show. 12-and-a-half minutes of The Hobbit,
which looked incredible.
So, he showed .0001% of The Hobbit ?
HARDWICK: Yeah, exactly, that's right.
Now it wouldn't be Comic-Con without cosplay, exclusive toys,
uh, (CHUCKLES)
and super cool art.
And who better to send on a fact-finding mission
than Chloe Dykstra from The Nerdist channel's show Just Cause.
(SHRIEKS)
So, you're Rorschach. Black Widow. -Mason Drake.
I'm a Floating Eye Of Death.
An Aquabat.
What's the reception been like, so far?
Um, people can't seem to take their eyes off of it.
The key to making a really good costume is
is taking the time and the effort to go the extra mile.
Can you explain what this is made out of?
Uh, this is a toilet paper holder.
-You guys ever do it in costume? -I'm sorry?
So, how did you do these?
These are actually party blowers.
-You can get party blowers from like... -(LAUGHS)
The 99ยข Store.
How do you go to the bathroom?
(SHRIEKING)
So, we all know that the costumes here at Comic-Con are amazing
but let's not forget about the freaking toys.
You've got some amazing line-up of toys this year.
We've got some good stuff.
One of the coolest things we have
is the reproduction Kenner Blue Snaggletooth action figure.
Did you do any tweaks on it at all?
No, that's 100% original
all the way down to the made in Hong Kong stamp on the back of the leg.
No way!
I don't know if I'd want to take that out of the package to be honest.
That one's actually made to be able to come out of the package
and be resealable. So, you can play with it. We went the extra mile.
So, these are the girls of Honey Trap . This is a Gentle Giant property.
These are all original sculptures, all original characters.
Why did you decide to make your own line as opposed to
making something from a comic book or a movie?
Well, we've been taking licenses for over 10 years now
and we've always been working with studios and being part of
someone else's creativity, someone else's creation.
So, this is the first time we decided,
well, we've been doing this so good for so long,
why don't we just do it all ourselves and come up with our own idea.
Each one has a little bit of something
that kind of harkens back to a famous film.
This character here, Lucky,
well, she's using some of the same shoulder harness stuff
that was used by Jesse "The Body" Ventura in Predator
-(LAUGHS) -So, there's little things on all of these.
You should totally cast me as one of the girls.
-Okay. Cool. With this outfit. -Sweet. Yeah, sure.
-All you need is a gun. You're in. -Can this count?
In case anybody forgot, Comic-Con is also
really famous for its amazing art and comics.
I'm here with Alex Pardee, here at Zerofriends.
PARDEE: Zerofriends is an art brand.
We do art prints. We do clothing.
It is mainly focused around my artwork,
just because I was kind of the flagship artist.
But now we're working with other artists as well.
Like, we have Craola, who's really, really big in the art world.
Skinner, who's my favorite artist of all time.
I also am also really attracted to things that inspire
other people's creativity and other people's imagination.
Like I love when I look at something and I think of,
"Oh, I have a million things I wanna do with that
"and go home and redraw something or get ideas."
So, I just had this idea to create this app where
I was like "Ah, you know, some pictures are kinda cool
"but they'd be way cooler if they had tentacles on 'em."
So I literally made an app called Way Cooler
where you can take any photo you want
or you can start with a blank canvas and
you can make things way cooler
by adding eyeballs and adding tentacles and adding all these things.
But it's all specifically my redrawn art.
-Can we see it. Can we make something way cooler now? -Yes. Yes.
Yeah.
That was way cooler.
Our next guest is no stranger to the wonders of Comic-Con.
He's an actor, a singer, a dancer, an author.
But to fans of Doctor Who and Torchwood he's better known as simply
Captain Jack. Ladies and gentlemen,
please put your hands together for John Barrowman.
(PHIRMAN PLAYING)
Nice to see you.
-Hi, boys. -Hello.
How are you?
That cross-references something that happened on The Nerdist podcast.
Or it's just a beautiful moment between two people.
Couldn't it just be that, Chris?
Yeah, what's wrong with you? You jealous?
-(LAUGHS) Yeah. -RAY: Give him one, John.
I'm a little jeal... Mmm...
-You won't will you? -RAY: Wow.
-I'll kiss you on the mouth. -Come on then.
HARDWICK: Take that, Ellen!
Uh, how was your Comic-Con experience?
(ALL LAUGH)
-My Comic-Con experience was awesome. -Yeah.
Really awesome.
What did you get to do though? You...
Well, number one, because I met you guys.
-That was... Yes. -ALL: Yes.
Oh, my God, you were such an incredible guest on The Nerdist podcast.
We did the live podcast at the Balboa Theatre.
And John, John was there
and just like right from the get go we all just hit if off really well
and the show was so much fun.
-I have a surprise for you. -What?
-Can I show you? -Yes.
'Cause it's like adding on from what happened on that evening.
-Yeah, you're ready? -Yeah.
I have to... I'm gonna stand up.
-Sorry. -Oh.
Yeah, this is the...
-Here. Hold this. -It was a crazy night, guys.
Hold this. I'm gonna stand on the chair. Ready?
These are my tribute to my Comic-Con.
(LAUGHING)
We're gonna have to clear a couple of things with legal.
How do I get down? There we go.
Yeah.
Please don't fall because you don't want... (LAUGHS)
You don't want to have to be cut out of your Iron Man underwear.
(ALL LAUGH)
-HARDWICK: Put in a cast. -It depends on who's cutting me out.
(ALL LAUGH)
Sorry, as I button myself. I've had a great Comic-Con.
-It was absolutely fantastic. -(ALL LAUGH)
Thank you very much
to The Nerdist, I had a great Con.
(ALL LAUGHING)
How many Comic-Cons have you been to?
-I think it's five or yeah, five or six. -HARDWICK: Yeah.
And they've all been under kind of different, um,
different kind of realms.
-That's a such a weird word, "realm." -Yeah.
-Yeah, but... -Not at Comic-Con.
No, that's totally where to come.
Yeah, but I've one you know, it's either Doctor Who or it's Torchwood
or it's been...
Like this most recently was I was hosting a show there
and also I was, uh...
You know, signing the new book
that my sister and me have coming out called Hollow Earth.
So, it's always been very different for me.
-But I love walking the floor. -Yeah.
I love going down on the floor
and walking around and seeing what's out there
and meeting the people and the fans.
It's just great. It's a great experience.
And everybody's so, kinda like, welcoming.
And the thing I hate the most, if you've noticed on the news
it's always "How Comic-Con is happening in San Diego,
-"All the weirdness that's going on." -Right.
You know what? (BLEEP) you. It's not weird.
It's not weird. It's not weird to us.
It's awesome.
And it's also,
you know, they always focus in on the costumes.
-But it's a heck of a lot more than costumes. -Yeah.
I mean the money that pours in from there and everything.
You know, there's a rich lot of nerds out there.
Well, I was reading a statistic that
Comic-Con, that the financial impact
that Comic-Con has on San Diego is $180 million.
-That is just across the board of everything that it brings. -It's unbelievable.
Wow, you could almost get half an Avengers movie made.
(ALL LAUGH)
You guys, what did you... What else did you... Did you see anything?
I got to do a zombie obstacle course.
HARDWICK: Oh, yeah, The Walking Dead Escape.
RAY: Yeah, I got to do that.
BARROWMAN: Are you being chased by zombies?
RAY: Yes, yeah.
So, if you listen to The Nerdist podcast
you know that Jonah has a thing for zombies
and I don't want to call it an obsession but let's just say
he's got a *** for the undead.
So, when we heard that The Walking Dead was offering fans
a chance to run for their lives
from actual, in the rotting flesh, zombies,
we knew we had to throw Mr. Jonah Ray into the fray.
(EERIE MUSIC)
Going to the evacuation area. I hope everything works out nicely.
(SCREAMING)
They're coming from the left!
This is like my favorite part of the zombie movie.
Where they run you through a ropes course.
It's the only way. We've got to go through the ropes course.
(SHRIEKS)
(GASPS)
(GROWLS)
(SCREAMS)
(SCREAMS INDISTINCTLY)
I might become a zombie if my heart explodes.
(ZOMBIE GROWLS)
(GASPS)
(GROWLS)
(SHRIEKS)
(PANTING) Oh, God.
Why'd I have those jalapeno poppers?
(SCREAMS)
(SHRIEKS)
ZOMBIE: (EERILY) Jonah.
You wanna drink these beers?
Padlocked. Damn it!
(BANGS)
(MOANS)
(GROWLS)
(SHOUTS)
(GROWLS)
(SIREN BLARING)
-He's good. -Clear! Clean!
Yeah! I'm (BLEEP) clean!
Right? Right? Right?
I'm glad that you made it.
HARDWICK: Jonah, you're surprisingly fit, my friend.
Thank you. Thank you.
HARDWICK: Coming up.
Some pretty juicy Torchwood gossip from John Barrowman.
Stay tuned!
I'm the first man ever to kiss the Doctor.
Whoa!
This is the Comic-Con taping, you guys,
we just got back from San Diego Comic-Con.
Which was truly, truly phenomenal this year.
What's your favorite element of Comic-Con?
Is it just sort of the like,
"Hey, we can all be comfortable with who we are" and stuff like that?
I personally love doing panels.
I love when, you know what,
whenever I've been on a Torchwood panel or I've been on a Who panel
and I like the interaction with the crowd
I like answering the questions.
I like talking to people.
I like also the fact to let them know that, you know,
'cause doing that kind of stuff
you let them know that you appreciate what they've done for you,
because we wouldn't be sitting here if it wasn't for the people who watch
or the fans out there.
So, I love doing that.
And, you know, I'm not one of those
actors who kind of,
puts on the glasses and doesn't want to talk about anything.
"Get away from me, I don't want any pictures."
You know what, get over yourselves.
HARDWICK: Yeah, I don't know what, you see that
you see that sometimes and then...
You see a those people and then you're just like...
You know these people pay for you to live...
How many times have you sat and interviewed somebody and they've got glasses on?
It's like, dude, or a girl...
No, not you...
-Can you see me? -That's exactly what I said.
No, I mean sun...
(LAUGHS) Jonah.
Sunglasses, right?
-Sunglasses. -Yes. Sunglasses.
-ALL: Oh, sunglasses. -Yeah, okay.
-But you wanna see their eyes. -Yeah.
You know, that's the way to the soul.
Well, I think some people just don't really...
-No, they're wankers. -They are.
(LAUGHING)
I remember seeing you there two years ago
and we were in the same hotel.
And you just went down to the gym
and people swamped you all the way to and from and then you worked out...
Not, not in the gym.
-HARDWICK: Not in the gym. -We're not going in there.
Me and the Spartacus boys in the gym.
(ALL LAUGHING)
It is really wonderful to me that,
you know, that Torchwood,
we talked about this a little bit on the podcast
but Captain Jack just had a couple episode arc on Doctor Who
and then became,
you know, just almost instantly part of the Doctor Who universe.
That's right. He was only meant to be in, I think it was two episodes
and then it, you know, became more over the course of time
I think it was through those first two years with David...
I think I was on... Geez, I've lost count,
but I know it wasn't probably more than like six or seven of them.
You know, but it...
The first two episodes, he wasn't a likeable guy.
And I was quite proud of that because I was able to play someone that wasn't,
you know, he was meant to be a bit bad and a bit self-centered.
So then, all of a sudden,
it switched and the audience just went with Captain Jack
and they saw this guy who was becoming part of the team
and he was... He ended up being a bit of a hero.
Actually the first time ever on television
a hero and a character that has been played
you know, where he likes both sexes.
And there was no issue ever made of it, you know.
And I was the first. This is the other thing,
I'm the first man ever to kiss the Doctor.
-Whoa! -Wow.
-Yeah. -That's pretty spectacular.
Of course it is.
(LAUGHING)
-Was it Eccleston? -It was Eccleston.
-It was Eccleston. Yeah. -Yeah.
BARROWMAN: Chris was a great doctor in the way that he brought the dark side.
You know, back, with the writing of Russell and Steven
and stuff like that. It was...
But you know, I like to have a good time on set.
So, you and Tennant together I'm sure it was...
David and I were just a laugh. David and I would have farting competitions.
(LAUGHS)
You know, and we...
If Catherine Tate was there,
or you know, if it was Billie, they'd be like,
"Oh, can we just get on with it, boys?"
(FARTS) "Okay!"
(ALL LAUGH)
So, David and I had a blast. We really enjoyed it.
Please don't go away. We're gonna be right back
with more of The Nerdist wrap-up of Comic-Con.
(PHIRMAN PLAYING)
Welcome to The Nerdist television show salute to Comic-Con 2012.
ALL: Yay!
Our next guest is the host of The Nerdist channel's show 4 Points,
The Totally Rad Show on Revision3,
and the former host of Diggnation, it's Alex Albrecht.
(PHIRMAN PLAYING)
Hello. Hello. Hello.
PHIRMAN: # Alex Albrecht #
Hello, Alex Albrecht.
Can I get that as my ringtone?
-We get that request a lot. - # Absolutely #
ALBRECHT: Yes.
Actually that should be your ringtone for me, which will be amazing.
It's Alex it's Albrecht. That was so not...
Every time people call me who have been on the show,
they're gonna get that as their personal ringtone.
That's amazing. That's why you have that.
He's not a that, it's a person.
PHIRMAN: I am human, after all.
Holy crap, it talks?
Yeah.
I really need to get one of those things. Jesus.
Yeah, yeah I got that at booth 29-31 at Comic-Con
Oh, yes!
Talking robot man.
Which is not actually that far off, you could probably get that at Comic-Con.
Almost, almost. How many Comic-Cons have you been to at this point?
This is seven, I think.
-Yeah. -Seven, yeah.
-What was... -They're all sort of blurs.
What did you see at Comic-Con this year that you enjoyed?
Oh, boy!
A lot of stuff.
Actually, the panel that you...
One of the many panels that you moderated, sir.
-It was a busy year. -It was the best...
It was really the best thing, I ever saw.
The Warner Brother/Legendary panel was really mind-blowing.
Seeing all the stuff from Pacific Rim was unbelievable.
Although, I was more excited with what Guillermo del Toro was saying
about what the movie is gonna be about, than the actual... The footage was awesome.
But, I think you gotta see that movie in order to get the scale of it.
And I think, just cause you guys don't know, Pacific Rim is essentially like...
ALBRECHT: Monsters fighting robots.
HARDWICK: Giant monsters fighting robots.
-BARROWMAN: Like Mothra and Godzilla. -Exactly.
-An honor to that genre. -But with Guillermo.
But, I think a guy like Guillermo del Toro will take
what could just be like,
-(YELLS) -Oh, it's like a big budget...
And he is so masterful at pulling humanity into,
you know, like just stunning visual tapestries.
-So, I'm super excited. -Yeah, I'm excited.
And he said some things that were great.
You know, there's no motion capture.
-It's all hand animated... -Actually what he said was,
"(BLEEP) motion capture!"
-"There's no (BLEEP) motion capture." -Yeah, he was super adamant.
He gives such good panel, man.
-He's great. -Do you know Burn Gorman,
who was in Torchwood with me and played the character Owen. He's in the movie.
-Oh, really? -Yeah.
That's pretty awesome. It looks spectacular.
I can't wait for it because, totally, growing up as a kid, that was my thing.
-You know, the old monster movies. -Was it?
Damon are you sure you're not wearing plaid under that blazer?
A little bit. I'm going plaid!
He's gone to plaid!
BARROWMAN: He's gone to plaid. HARDWICK: He's on the other side.
MIRA: What did the Man of Steel stuff look like?
It was gorgeous. It really was gorgeous.
Because it's Nolan producing and Zack Snyder directing.
It has that kind of dark grittiness that we saw with Batman Begins .
Where it's just kind of a reimagining of Superman, and Zack Snyder said,
we kind of just had to assume that the story had started over.
There's an image of a boy running through the fields in Kansas.
And I'm trying to keep it together.
And that boy running through the fields in Kansas is...
Has a cape on and it's this great score and he pulls his hands up.
You don't see the whole image.
As he pulls his hands up to make the Superman pose, it cuts away.
I got (BLEEP) emotional.
-It was really nice. -It was awesome.
What else did you go to?
The Marvel stuff was cool. The Ant-Man footage...
-I did see. -You saw?
Saw.
-Genius. -Yeah
-I mean it's like... -Well, it's Edgar. It's Edgar Wright.
No, but the stuff that he does. Because, you know...
Ant-Man. Even when I heard it, I was like,
"Okay, we're getting a little deep in the Marvel lore here."
Well, what's this about? Well, he's a guy and then he can like become an ant.
Right? But then, he can come back and he's just a guy.
And I'm like, Okay.
That's the next big Marvel movie, I'm supposed to get behind.
They showed the test footage and, literally it's like,
you know two security guards are sitting in a long hallway
and the Ant-Man is in the vent.
So it pulls all the way back to the vent
and you see this little guy standing in the air vent.
And you're like, "Whoa, okay. This is starting to look awesome."
He's in awesome suit.
And then, all of a sudden, he like...
The camera starts moving down the hallway, as if he's running down the hallway.
You can't see anything, he's a (BLEEP) ant.
And then, bam! He's this huge guy in front of these security guards.
They pull out a gun.
And as the guy is pulling out the gun, the guy smacks into becoming an ant
and runs down the barrel of the guy's gun as it fires.
It jumps up, hits the guy in the face as little Ant-Man guy.
His face is like...
(EXCLAIMS)
Then the other guy's tie flies up like this and he's like, "What the balls?"
And then, boom! Then, boom!
He's the big guy, the guy gets flipped through
and he gets in the elevator and the elevator starts to go down and he goes...
I mean it was like I wanna... What? That's Ant-Man!
That's not Ant-Man. That's (BLEEP)...
What!
And a blogger online, he coined the term "size-fu",
is what we're gonna start seeing and it's such a genius idea.
I mean running on the gun, I was like... Running on the gun.
I think they didn't need the trailer, they could've just had you explaining it.
"And then holy balls!"
And his tie was up and the guy's like, "What?"
Coming up we're gonna see more of Jonah Ray on the floor of Comic-Con,
pitting himself up with most diabolical of all creatures,
the brain of the nerd. We'll be right back.
Lightning round, you ready for this? You ready for this?
-Edward or Jacob? -Jacob.
-Edward. -No.
Welcome back to The Nerdist. You're locked in here with me.
No, not really. We can't do that 'cause of fire codes.
You know what really ticks me off?
When someone who isn't really a nerd attends Comic-Con.
I mean, you don't see me cruising around the annual sports convention.
Which I'm sure is a thing.
Looking in to join a game of soccer ball.
That's why I sent Jonah down to Comic-Con to put some geeks on the spot.
Hey, I'm Jonah Ray here at Comic-Con in San Diego
and we're here to play Nurd Quiz, the kwiz 4 nurdz.

See you back at the studio, in just a little bit.
Ah.
I loved the time I was on Nurd Quiz
I guess none of your hardcore fans were there on that day, Jonah. I'm sorry.
Ah, that's fine.
(LAUGHING)
What was the Star Wars presence at Comic-Con like this year?
I was pretty... I got... I went to Museum Replicas.
They were allowing you to build your own Jedi costumes, so you can order,
like, parts of different Jedi costumes, so you can make your own.
And they have the prices out, so...
You could get a Jedi robe that's pretty authentic for, like, 189 dollars.
Which was only 40 more dollars than Mark Hamill would be charging
-for his autograph later that day... Yeah. -Oh, wow.
So, Course of the Force was a five day light saber relay run
that we did Olympic torch-style that started in Santa Monica
and ended preview night of Comic-Con in San Diego
all the way down the California coast.
We did it in a partnership with Lucasfilm,
and Octagon, the company that actually produces the Olympic torch relay.
And we passed an Olympic torch, like, nerd-to-nerd in cosplay
all the way down to the coast for the Make-A-Wish foundation.
And we were able to grant over 1000 wishes with the money that we raised.
And so if you were involved in the Course of the Force, thank you so much.
There were some incredible cosplay.
-Dude, the General Grievous! -HARDWICK: Yeah, there was a General Grievous.
ALBRECHT: The human was sown into the cape
and then there was a skeletal General Grievous on front of the cape.
And he literally, like, moved like General... It was, it was really freaky.
And then he passed his light saber to this...
To this Jedi, who we did not know they were related, 'cause that's odd.
And she, like, force-did something and the guy, he (BLEEP) exploded.
HARDWICK: He exploded. ALBRECHT: Literally exploded and we're like,
I'm the one... In the middle I was like, "What? Ah!"
And saying, "Clean General Grievous off the road, cars are coming."
His head... His head flew off and we're, like, "Oh, my God, that poor guy."
And then we found out they were related and they do this for fun. I don't know...
Yeah, 'cause to us, we thought, "She just ruined that guy's..."
-She's ruined... -That costume.
It was sort of like, "I'll go along with it, Pretty Girl. Ah, I tripped.
"Oh, my (BLEEP), this thing that I made,
"that I spent years making, is on the (BLEEP) ground."
"-And she's leaving, she's now running away." -Yeah.
-At two miles an hour. -"I didn't get the number. Yeah, I can't even get up."
Well, we know what a big fan of running Jonah Ray is,
so we sent him to run for Course of the Force.
Hey, this is Jonah Ray in Santa Monica, California
for the start of Course of the Force. Celebrating all things Star Trek.
-MAN: Star Wars. -Huh?
-Star Wars. -Star Wars?
(BLEEP)
We're gonna do one, two, three and name, name our favorite Star Wars characters.
-One, two, three, The Frog King... -Han Solo.
...from Episode I.
-Anakin's boss! -Boba Fett.
From the shop he worked at.
-Who's your favorite Ewok? -My favorite Ewok's Matt Mira.
What's your favorite Star Wars movie?
-The original, Star Wars. -The original,
- Episode I with Anakin Skywalker? -The original Episode I.
Anakin Skywalker...
-Right from the beginning. -Yeah, Episode... The pod racing.
-The original Star Wars? -The original Star Wars.
-What's your dog's name? -It's House.
-It's House? -House.
-Is House dressed up like Luke Skywalker? -Not intentionally.
Oh, look, his light saber's out.
Yeah, he's a Sith Lord.
What's your all time favorite line from Star Wars? Mine is, "Yippee."
"Luke, I am your father."
Oh, see, I thought It was gonna be, "Yousa people think we gonna die?"
Is this designed to make me cry.
-(VOCALIZING ROBOT SOUNDS) -I think that's actually a racial slur you just did.
-Favorite Star Wars line is... -Okay.
-On three. -BOTH: One, two, three.
BOTH: "Porkins, no."
-Oh, my God! -What? That is crazy.
-Your favorite Star Wars movie out of all of them. -Okay.
BOTH: One, two, three. Spaceballs . What?
Okay, so, what are you guys doing here? You having fun?
-Oh, yeah. -MAN IN THE MASK: You're dumb.
-You're dumb? (BLEEP) Who do you think you are? -That's not nice.
-Suck it. -Who do you think you are you (BLEEP) dork? It's a...
-You're fired. -Oh, my God! Damn it.
Undercover Boss, Star Wars Edition.
Cheese.
We're probably taking this road
because we can see all my favorite strip malls in southern California.
-See you in hell. -(PEOPLE CHEERING)
All right. (LAUGHS)
-(WHOOPS) -There he is.
I thought they smelled bad on the outside.
I thought you smelled bad on the outside.
(GROANS) This thing's breaking.
(YELLING)
(LAUGHING)
This isn't working, huh?
(LAUGHING)
We're making this happen. It's all for charity.
Are you speeding up on purpose?
Take it.
Yeah. Yeah!
Oh, boy.
-Wow, Jonah, you're remarkably fit. -Thank you.
-Thank you. -How you doing over there, Ryan.
Do you need us to stop and pose, are we moving too fast, what's happening?
No, I got all the guys already.
-Oh, wow! -Yeah, I'm just coloring it,
and doing some word balloons of things you guys are talking about for the...
-Oh, boy. -"It's the weekend" and stuff.
-Can't wait to see it... -You know what mine's gonna say.
Any stuff that's coming out of your mouth.
That's (BLEEP) with "S".
Sure is.
Coming up, more of the adventures of Jonah Ray at Comic-Con.
Watch as he trolls the very talented denizens of Artists' Alley.
And see how they manifest their anger. We'll be right back.
Could you make me like a new kind of turtle, a new Ninja Turtle character?
-Like the... Like the fifth Beatle, like a fifth turtle? -Yeah.
Welcome back to The Nerdist.
We're talking San Diego Comic-Con, 2012, the Mecca for everything nerds care about.
And Glee.
I think my favorite place at Comic-Con is Artists' Alley.
Just one giant stretch... Just table after table of insanely talented artists.
Who would do exactly what our friend Ryan is doing over there today.
They will turn your *** into a superhero right before your eyes.
And, since we want you, The Nerdist viewer,
to experience it almost first hand,
we gave Jonah, who never really wanted to experience it at all,
a sketchbook and a fistful of cash and sent him down to Artists' Alley.
And here's what happened.
Hey, Ben "Something" Smith.
This is what's it's all about at Comic-Con. Art based off of movies and TV.
If you could, like make a picture of me really quick so I could get going.
Because I heard it's, like, open bar from, like, three to four.
-What do you want me to draw? -Just do like a really awesome picture of me.
Could you make me like a new kind of turtle, a new Ninja Turtle character?
Like the... Like the fifth Beatle, like a fifth turtle?
Yeah, I'm the guy that's just there, making sure
everybody's getting their pizza delivered and anything like that.
I can do like a Simpsons- style character, if that's cool.
That would be dream come true. It is my favorite show.
There's a cartoon they're making. They're doing a panel...
-I could get there. -You don't mind being shot in the head, do you?
No, no, no, no. Shot in the Head is like one of my favorite movies.
And they're actually doing a screening of it today in Hall H.
Well, do you have a good side that you like, one or the other or...
Every side is the good side as far as my mom's concerned.
Well, Simpsons don't really have strong chins or anything.
So, can I get a little profile of you?
-Sure, sure, yeah, yeah. So, just look this way? -Yes.
-Little more this way. -Like this?
-No, no, no. No opposite one, this way. -Okay.
He's doing a drawing of me, though. So that's pretty good.
Yes. Yeah, yeah. I'll see you there. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Rob Zombie party, yeah, yeah, yeah.
-You enjoying the convention or what? -Oh, yeah, I've seen, like...
All these celebrities, I saw, like, this movie last night.
Like, I went to this Microsoft party, there was all these chicks and rappers.
It's like, there's no movie stuff here. Where's all that hot people?
-There you go. Sir, come on. Hey. -Sorry, I'm just...
Trying to get into this party tonight. Just, you know, real important (BLEEP), man.
-Have fun in Movieland. -Thank you so much.
-Jonah, you're surprisingly fit. -Thank you, Chris.
You made a lot of friends it seems like over there.
Yeah, yeah, I mean, I didn't really get to take a look at any of the drawings.
-Yeah, because I ran straight to an awesome party... -Yeah.
-...with lots of rappers and girls. -Yeah.
Yeah, but you can have this. I don't really care about art.
Here you go.
-All right. -I didn't really get a good look at them, though.
-So that's me with some really cool sunglasses, I'm guessing. -Yeah.
Dear (BLEEP), be (BLEEP) and (BLEEP) off. P.S. (BLEEP) you.
We had a blast.
That's me with an awesome rack.
(LAUGHING) Suck it. From your favorite nerd.
That's me as a Ninja Turtle.
HARDWICK: Leo-tardo?
He got my jaw line. Yeah, my jaw line's all good.
-There's me as a Simpsons guy. -"Worst Jonah Ray ever."
-Wow. -Oh, excellent, Jonah.
You made some excellent impressions.
Well done, Artists' Alley.
Let's check in with Ryan.
Ryan, you remember the old days of Comic-Con. What do you think of it now?
Oh, man I started going years ago. Like, 20 years ago. I was a little kid. So...
-Gross. -Yeah, it was wrong but...
So it was just, comic books and artists.
You could just walk up to the table. There was no lines or anything.
So now it's just... I don't even have words to describe it.
When did you see change start happening?
When did you start to see other media kind of moving in?
Uh, the first X-Men movie.
-Oh, really? -Yeah.
-So not till 2001. -Yeah, around that is when it really...
I mean it started picking up slowly for the years before that.
But once Hollywood came in, there was all that money...
And everyone was more involved with the super hero characters.
-Yeah. -That's when it really started growing.
Did you think that's a good thing or do you think...
'Cause I think some purists are like, "Man, it should just be about the comic books."
But I tend to think...
Because there's so much money being, you know...
Because they see the potential for so much money,
we actually are getting really good, high budget...
-'Cause the superhero movies we got when I was a kid... -Yeah... Oh.
-...were, eh, quirky. -Yeah.
I remember the Captain America I saw when I was a kid.
-Remember the night... -The rubber ears he...
-ALBRECHT: Yeah, yeah. -HARDWICK: Oh, yes.
The Spider-man where the, yeah...
Kind of looks like the homeless guy on Hollywood Boulevard right now.
A little bit.
He comes out to you and you're like, "That's the guy in the movie Spider-man. "
That's why I think it's good that the culture has kind of gotten
so much money and so much popularity.
Because we get a huge budget Avengers movie and Godzilla and whatnot, so...
I don't think... Would you agree or would you disagree?
Oh, no. It's great for the companies, it's great for the industry.
There are the purists like you said, you know. They want the...
Hollywood out of the convention and stuff.
If Hollywood was out of the convention, it'd be back to one little square.
There'd be no, you know, the Owlship from Watchmen
that you got to walk through couple of years ago.
Or the throne from Thor that Marvel had, there wouldn't be any of that stuff.
There wouldn't be any of the cool stuff,
there wouldn't be the hundreds of thousands of people going.
Going!
There wouldn't the Castle Grayskull that you could walk through.
-My heart broke. -She-Ra was there too.
(MOANING)
-Castle Grayskull. -Princess of Power.
-I don't know why I'm singing like that... -Okay, I asked She-Ra...
I did an interview with She-Ra and I asked her,
who has to die for her to become the Queen of Power.
She didn't get it.
And then, a man wearing a shirt that said "Event Staff" dragged you off.
When we come back, we're gonna finally get to see what Jonah, Matt and I look like
through the eyes of the mighty Ryan Winn.
My God, I'm tingling all over. Don't you dare touch that remote.
Welcome back.
Welcome back. I just have to say, I thought we're all gonna be exhausted.
We all came from Comic-Con, we've all been up for almost 24 hours.
It's time to reveal our very own artist, our comic book panel over there.
Ryan is making some Nerdist art for us so, I'm gonna go see...
There's a bunch of swears. That's (BLEEP) with an S.
This is General Grievous, there's music. Thank you so much, Ryan Winn.
Ryanwinn.com with two Ns.
Please help me in thanking Mike Phirman, Jonah Ray, Matt Mira,
and our guests Damon Lindelof,
Alex Albrecht,
John Barrowman.
And of course you guys.
Each and every person who attended San Diego Comic-Con this year.
Especially the ones who camped out to get into Hall H.
Thank you so much for allowing me to moderate your panels this year.
It was truly an honor to moderate for you. Thank you so much.
Good night, everyone. Enjoy your burrito!
Look, you've got lasers.
