hello and welcome to another installment of workshops by retrohex where i'll be
showing you some tips and tricks around building your WordPress website and
creating your visual brand. Over the next couple of weeks I'm going to be doing video
series around helping you learn more about SEO and free SEO activities to help
increase your rank in Google search. So the first tip is a new tool, well a fairly
new tool by Google, called "Google my business" and we'll be looking at that a
little bit later on in the video, but first up let's have a look at actually what is
SEO So what does SEO stand for it stands for
search engine optimization. So what is a search engine you may be asking. Well
most of you would use Google as your search engine. Every time you go to
Google and ask a question you're typing your question into Google's search
engine other search engines include Yahoo and
Bing and there are few more out there that I've never heard of. So what does it
mean to be optimized in search engines it basically means doing certain
activities that increase the rank of your website so when people type in a
question like best donuts in Toowoomba your page will rank high on that result
so it doesn't happen overnight but with a bit of consistency and doing some of
these few activities you will increase your rank. The first tool that we're
going to be using..."Google my business" So what you need to do is just go to type
"Google my business" into your browser or your search and click through on to
Google my business and it will take you to the homepage. So Google likes
to know everything about everything and this tool helps Google learn a lot about
your business and helps Google make search results relevant for your
customers who are searching. So the more information you can give about your
business the better. The big thing about ranking high in Google is to be
consistent and to keep adding relevant content. The Google my business tool
makes it super easy to add content consistently. It even notifies you via email
when you need to add more content. Click start now or get started
Now I already have an account with "Google my business" so it
will prompt you to sign in to your Google account if you don't have a
Google account it will prompt you to create one. So it will ask for your
business name your country your street address, your business phone
number your website etc etc. now if you don't want to add your home address you
can get a address through using a co-working space in your local area
co-working space is also a great place to actually work from, I work from
a co-working space, I'm here right now, and once you've entered all your
details Google will then send you a letter in the mail to that address -
with your confirmation code so you need to get that code and enter it into the
Google my business where it asks you to. So usually it takes about one to two
weeks - for Google to send that through to you.Once Google confirms that yes you
are at that address they will then put a little icon on the map of your
location and then people will be able to actually type your business name
in or type in your industry and it will come up with you as one of those local
industry businesses in that local area on the Google map. So here I've typed in
a search and this is the map that comes up so after all the ads that people are
paying for, this is the map that comes up in our local region and it has the little
map icon. So once it's created you can then go in and see your little icon
on Google maps.There I am, when they click on that they'll be able to see the
posts that I've been posting, read reviews and also click through to my
website. So this is where you will come when you sign into your new Google
business account and see on the left hand side, home, where you can post,
information about you insights, reviews, photos, about your websites, where you
can actually build a website with Google, users, you can create it ads, all those
sorts of things, you can look at your insights here. So who's been searching
where the searching results are coming from, are they searching for your name
are they searching for industry. So here this is where you can edit your
information and you want to put things like your opening hours, your phone
number your website. Make sure you put what you do - your primary category and
your additional categories because that's that helps Google with their
search results. I highly recommend adding regular posts. Google will send you
reminders of when you need to add a new post so you just add them, similar to the
Facebook posting you can add a photo and you can add
a button, to link to book or order, buy now, learn more or sign
up, those sorts of things. You write your post up to 300 words you can even make
in an event and you can add your photo there, and that's what it will look like
when it's published. There's another great feature which is the
ability to have people review your business and you can actually create a
link that you can give to your customers so when you have worked with them and
you do a follow-up email and you can say thank you and would you mind reviewing
me on Facebook and Google and you can add that link where they can then link
through and give you a review. I'll add that "how to create a review link"
