Here at the Daugherty Arts Theater you're more likely to catch a show by a small local
theater group than a Broadway production. But that's one of the great things about Austin,
performing arts are welcome in all forms. The theater is part of the Austin Parks and
Recreation Department, and is located on a site one occupied by the Naval and Marine
Reserve. This is a great Austin location. Right here on Barton Springs Road you're close
to lots of great restaurants, Auditorium Shores, and even miniature golf. The Daugherty Arts
Center took over this location in 1978 and was named for Mary Ireland Graves Daugherty,
a prominent local arts supporter who passed away in 1977. This well known sculpture was
created by David Ellis in 1980, and is the Daugherty Arts Center landmark. There are
150 seats here at the theater, and you'll have a great view of any performance on the
stage. Don't be fooled by the small size. The Daugherty Theater offers quality lighting
and sound equipment, as well as dressing room space. Perfect for a community project.
