What we're going to discuss, is how to go over a firefighter's turnout clothing, to
inspect for any discoloration or damage, due to chemical or thermal damage, from the heat
of fire. The gear should be looked over from front to back, inspecting all areas for any
discoloration, that might show us that the gear has been damaged, by fire or chemical.
By pulling and tugging on the gear in those areas, where we might find some discoloration,
will let us know whether or not, the gear needs to go out for repair, or whether it
needs to be replaced. The gear is very easily damaged by ultraviolet light, so the pulling
and tugging will also ensure, that we find any weak areas that sunlight may have caused
some damage, because normally, ultraviolet light will not show those same signs of discoloration,
that we would find from thermal burns, or thermal damage, or any type of chemical damage.
A firefighter's turnout ensemble should be inspected at least monthly, to make sure it
has not been damaged by chemical, thermal, or ultraviolet light.
