Helping neighbors, sewing for art, and cutting-edge space science:
Welcome to the UAB Minute. Donations to the UAB Benevolent Fund support UAB's
Employee Emergency Assistance Program and more than 120 nonprofits,
from the American Diabetes Association to the YMCA of Greater Birmingham.
This year, the fund is taking on a new project: building a house through Habitat
for Humanity.

Visiting artist Amanda Browder is looking for help from the community for
two giant fabric installations that will wrap UAB buildings to celebrate the
university's expanding arts corridor.
Browder will be in town for two residencies this spring and summer
and is calling on sewers to come out to help assemble the massive pieces.
UAB's Larry DeLucas is on a crystal quest. He is the principal investigator on a
$6 million dollar project that is sending nearly 100 protein crystal experiments
to the International Space Station. Crystals grow larger in space;
when they're brought back to earth, scientists bombard them with x-rays to
figure out the proteins' structures,
crucial information to discover new drugs. Watch the launch of the SpaceX
rocket live at UAB.edu/reporter/spacex.
