Before it gets to your tap your drinking water is cleaned, disinfected, and
tested to make sure it passes all the standards, but sometimes it can get
contaminated at the last hurdle, in your home.
Spillages of fuels, oils and solvents can seep through plastic water pipes
and contaminate your drinking water. These chemicals can also be extremely
harmful to your health.
It may take days, weeks or even months to notice a fuel or solvent taste or
smell in your drinking water. Here's a few simple steps you can take to
protect your drinking water.
When servicing or maintaining your vehicle take care not to spill any oil
or fuel. Make sure you dispose of any waste responsibly, to protect the
environment, and your drinking water.
When refilling your heating oil tank, take care to avoid spills. Keep an
eye on your tank level checking perhaps once a month to make sure the level
isn't dropping faster than you would expect. If it does you may have a
leak which could contaminate your drinking water as well as wasting fuel,
and costing you money.
Any minor spills need to be cleaned up as soon as possible, but spills of
any significant size need to be reported to the environmental health
officer at your local council.
Even when painting at home think about how you use and dispose of chemicals
such as white spirit. These can also contaminate your water supply. We
suggest you tip it into a sealable bottle or container before disposing of
it with the rest of your household rubbish.
Remember fuels, and solvents can seep through plastic water pipes, and into
your drinking water. If you have noticed a fuel or solvent taste or smelled
