the scaling question can be a great tool to help them work through such times
in this video you learned the three basic steps to formulate an effective scaling
question
the first step is to select a scalable problem the second step is to scale the
problem in the client's current position on the scale
step 3: the final step consists of identify strengths and goals
we're going to take a peek into a session that is already in progress
Each step will be described in detail followed by a demonstration of the step
%uh
step 1: so let this go a little problem
skoo problem these any concern that the client has some history with
is important that a problem children is broad enough
such as my relationship with my partner
my health my professional life or my job addiction
let's see what is happening in the session started watch
so is there any one particular area of your life
where you feel more the sensitive I'm lost
then in any other I
I really feel like I'm going through some kind of mid-life crisis
com I really don't know how to manage it at this particular point I really to get
in some sort of grounded I'm understanding so to speak up where
I could take it and maybe move on and you
into a more positive area my life
so what you've said it sounds to me as if you're talking about
the purpose and meaning of your life would you like to explore that a bit
more
yes I definitely would %uh
%uh step 2 skill the problem and the client's current position on the scale
ask your client to imagine a problem you're discussing
in a scale from 0-10 where 0 is
the worst a problem could ever be and Hannes
the best things could ever be then simply ask your client where he or she
is
on the scale let's watch so in terms of purpose and meaning to your life
let's just say if you could imagine the
absolute worst you could ever be
let's let's make that 0 and the absolute best
green felt that you knew exactly what the purpose and meaning if your life is
that's a that's a 10 *** *** would you say you are right now
I think at this particular point I would say them about
6 can you tell me a little more about that it's with the school that I'm at
right now I don't feel like I'm
able to up expand my
knowledge in school and school I feel like I'm just sort of stuck there
not been able to sort of work to get to become a better teacher who learned my
craft
I'll step 3: identify strengths singles
this is the core the skill in question which is in reality
a set of questions and purpose are these questions is due on congress stressing
clarify goals
for instance a question like what's stopping you from going one point down
on the scale will reveal strengths and resources that person has been using to
work through difficulties
here's another question have you ever been a higher number
this question maybe he'll pass successes
resources used and motivation a question like
what would a point higher on the scale black would help in vision a possible
future in very specific terms
let's watch pay attention to the questions the counselor asks
as she also uses basic counselling skills so
what's stopping you from going from Essex say down to a five yr up for
I i've always found that to be empowering to be able to empower myself
not to
be dependent upon other people is sorta
from get me to the next point on which is little bit ironic it's positive
thinking about it cuz
I really love being with people and I find that to be my most
the greatest strength you know to be with people and to be around people were
there P
I'm you know adults orders children or whatever I I find
just that forces people around me really gets me power you know what I mean like
be like the low Sun gives the power to Superman people gives mean
it gives me the power so I can imagine like being in a solitary alone time when
I not be so bad for
particular period time but I feel like in the end its people that I
enjoyed being with have you ever been at a higher number than six
yes absolutely com I
he was definitely higher than six when I did
my a second study abroad actually my first one was really good but my second
one in particular when I was getting my teacher credential I did my credential
in mexico and I with really integrating myself within the culture
and I met a lot of new people there and my colleagues and I we work together
to be apart %uh the community in in a positive
meaningful way and i felt that that also contributed to the fact that I
I'm was at a point in my life that I really not only was very memorable but
actually
shape me for who I feel like I am at this particular point
127 look like I guess the seven would definitely be working in a school or I
can be with other teachers and colleagues we can share
our ideas and to be able to developer crafted teaching that would probably
make
I would say that be a good sufficient seven for me what would Anne
look like an eight definitely would be me living
in another country I and
at least starting to explore different options in terms of working in the their
community as well as
I'm expanding my her eyes and in terms of working as
and some particular outreach programs as well as and developing educational
programs to
sort of work into their I'm the lifestyle that the community time
I'm working and basically what what it can be
if it was to be a nine or ten I would say you would have to be it
a position where I know I could actually stay with it for
a long period of time not just sort of a short period time a time where I could
really just let myself be free and
and get integrated with the community as well as
that my the my colleagues and myself
so so far
you'll identified that you wanna be a prior
you wanna work on your crap
being a teacher being in an environment where there's some sorted
collaboration where you and your colleagues are helping
each other to become better teachers perhaps even a university nearby
mom you want to be around people
you want to help children what are some of your strengths that will help you
reach these goals
at this point the session can take different directions
let's see how everything that happened in this session is catching on scale
the person has identified several things his passion for teaching and working
with children
energizes and powers can he like to work in a more collaborative environment
he was feeling even more of the field if you work developing educational programs
abroad
the ideal work situation would also include financial stability
0 let's review the steps one last time
step 1: select a scalable problem
step 2 scale the problem and the client's current position on the scale
step 3: identify strengths and goals
there are three other steps to master the skill in question
step 1: practice step 2
practice and step 3: yes you guessed correctly
practice I'll %uh
