[Noah Keamo, Leeward Community College student tour guide: Good morning class. How are you
guys doing today? What age group is this?]
>> Narrator Emilie Howlett, UH Manoa student: Every year Leeward Community College hosts
Discover Leeward Day.
>> Keamo: Basically we get all the ten high schools on the Leeward side to come on down
and check out all the CTE programs we have here.
>> Narrator: CTE stands for Career and Technical Education. During the event, each high school
tours three programs.
[Keamo guiding students: We are going to go to your first session. It will be the automotive
session.]
>> Narrator: Along with automotive, the other programs highlighted were culinary arts, teaching,
health, business, digital media and TV production.
>> Keamo: So they get to come out and see what programs we offer here. And if they want
to come to Leeward, they can, they know what we have here.”
[Teacher talking to students: It’s not something under the hood that you can spot.]
>> Narrator: The students check out the facilities, enjoy hands-on displays and workshops and
meet instructors who basically share the same message.
>> Ray Tanimoto, Leeward Community College automotive instructor: There is a very good
opportunity for them to learn this trade at Leeward Community College.
[Teacher talking to students: We are about job training. Period.]
>> Narrator: The students also learn exactly what’s involved in each program and what
will be expected of them.
[Teacher talking to students: We start you off the first semester teaching you how to
use the equipment.]
>> Narrator: They also try out equipment, from the green screen of the broadcast program.
[Student: Tomorrow is going to be sunny again. Very good!]
>> Narrator: To the kitchen of the culinary program.
>> Koualoha Victor-Kahao, Nanakuli High School senior: We got to mix, we got to watch all
the students to do their thing. It was really good.
>> Samuel Leigh, Waialua High School senior: I think it was very insightful and it showed
you how the programs work.
>> Victor-Kahao: Very good experience for all of us upcoming college students, especially
us seniors so we do know what we are going to experience when we do come here.
>> Narrator: That’s another important goal of Discover Leeward Day–showing that there
is no reason to be intimidated by the concept of going to college.
>> Keamo: Part of the tour is basically looking around and seeing what campus life is all
about.
>> Leigh: It’s just very like, you know, normal. It’s just normal. Just like high
school. It sets the questions that I had.
>> For many students, Discover Leeward Day is an important first step into higher education.
>> Leigh: It basically sold me where I am going to go.
