>> Hi.
I'm Erika Parker with Verizon.
We all know that New Jersey sure was hit hard by hurricane Sandy
in 2012 and today I am here
at Hugh J. Boyd Jr. elementary school
in Seaside Heights where members
of our Verizon Leadership Development Program are here
to pitch in,
help clean up the school,
and get it in shape for its students to return in the fall.

>> What's so special about the VLDP program is
that we are building the leaders of the future for Verizon.
And part of building the leaders is just like all
of us here making sure that we live the Credo every day
so embedding corporate responsibility
in the leadership development program curriculum was just
a natural
and these guys are so excited.
The minute we announced it, it's like boom, these guys are there
because we don't run away from a crisis.
We run to it.
They live it every day and it's just so exciting
to see them all here doing that.

>> These events really help make sense
of the whole restoration effort and we do so much work
in the office and make all these engineering plans
and designs and everything
but seeing this really brings it home so as I said
we affect the customer, you know, why we work.

>> So we are at this elementary school
that was affected by hurricane Sandy.
And we are out here.
There are different groups of us.
Some people are doing painting indoors;
some people are doing landscape outside
and we are really trying to restore the school back
to what it was so we can get the students back in school.
We've had a lot of good progress.
We've made huge, huge strides to get our community back together
and today is just another part of that
with the volunteer groups coming down
which Verizon is a big part of.
What's happened at Seaside Heights that doesn't get talked
about a lot is all the volunteers
that have stepped forward
from the day after October 29th.
>> They've really come in
and helped put the classroom back together.
They painted the rooms.
The landscaping was obviously a mess because the outside was,
you know, the whole town was taken over by water.
So the landscaping looks a lot better
and of course the playground was a wreck and they've been redoing
so it looks a lot better than what it looked like.
This obviously financially has helped us out a lot
where we can take that money and utilize it towards other things
such as desks or possibly wireless Internet or iPads
or you know we can use this money we are saving today
by having so many volunteers here to concentrate
on other educational components.
So it's a huge help to us.
