Where some musicians focus on the music itself
I focus on the people.
We're not seeing it as musicians and audience
but we're seeing a community of a circle.
And when you're creating that, everybody feels comfortable.
My name is Yoni Avital and I'm the leader of The Shuk
♫ Ibrahim Hallil Allah ♫
The Shuk is a project that we started in 2008. Its a group that uses the medium of music
to break down cultural barriers between people.
♫ Adama ... Ve'shamayim ... ♫
The word 'Shuk' means a marketplace. And if you're creating a real 'Shuk'
you're creating a platform and a space that
everyone feels comfortable in an exchange.
You get exactly what you get at a market.
You get baskets of different flavors.
And that's exactly what we're trying to bring to the stage.
The people who are performing with The Shuk
The musicians are just exceptional people. Everyone comes from a different background.
In one performance you can hear world music, ethnic music, flamenco.
You could hear Ladino, Arabic, Hebrew being sung.
It doesn't matter who's out there listening.
We want to make it applicable. We want to make a tangible.
And that's what we've been doing and I think it's a big part of this project's success.
