Hello and welcome to ennTV, I’m Paulette Frank from our enterprise-wide sustainability
working group. Johnson and Johnson is committed corporate
citizenship, including all the ways we impact the world environmentally, economically and
socially. In this episode we explore some of our efforts with a
story on the United Nations Population Fund, a profile of Sterilmed incorporated – and
up first – an inside look at Neutrogena Naturals with ennTV reporter Josh Binswanger.
Located a few blocks from Los Angeles International Airport, NEUTROGENA Corporation exemplifies
the commitment that Johnson and Johnson has made to the environment …and to sustainability.
I met with General Manager Susan Sweet to learn more about the company’s Neutrogena
Naturals’ product line and their overall guiding principle of “doing good”.
When we think about our materials-- the ingredients that we use for these products, it's important
that we-- we've taken a look at our bio nutrients and not just for their efficacy but also to
see if we can source them from local farms. To have ingredients that are certified sustainable.
Anything we can do like that is what we've really taken a hard look at for our materials.
Stephanie Choi, associate brand manager showed us other ways Neutrogena Naturals supports
a healthier environment.
In terms of material, we have a very high percentage of naturally derived formulations.
I think the average is around 95%. Our cartons are made of 100% recycled paper and what is
really great about using recycled paper is that we use 75% less water in processing than
non recycled paper would.
In recognition of Neutrogena’s sustainability efforts, Neutrogena Naturals recently earned
the Earthwards recognition for its efforts to reduce its impact on the environment.
Neutrogena Naturals is one of 26 products from the Johnson & Johnson family of companies
that has earned the Earthwards recognition. We’ve set a healthy future 2015 goal of
adding 60 products to our portfolio. Because of the Johnson & Johnson commitment to global
health, we have also partnered with the United Nations Population Fund whose mission is to
promote the rights of every person on the earth to enjoy a life of “health and equal
opportunity”.
I’m Babatunde Osotimehin, I’m Executive Director of the United Nations Population
Fund in New York. H4 Plus is a coordinated mechanism that ensures that international
organizations work together for women and children’s health. We are happy to have
Johnson & Johnson; they are the first private sector organization that actually came forward
with resources to this initiative. J&J has been a very important partner in each of these
countries, providing services and ensuring access to products out there, which makes
a difference in the lives of these people.
Another way Johnson & Johnson companies promote the sustainability of health care is through
product reuabasbilty and recycling. Our next story profiles a company that specializes
in doing just that. Sterilmed is making healthcare more affordable and sustainable by reducing
equipment costs and environmental waste. Here again is Josh Binswanger
Not long ago, most hospitals used surgical tools once and then threw them away. Sterilmed
restores single use medical devices using a propriety reprocessing (or cleaning) system.
Reprocessing has now become a standard practice… and Sterilmed allows hospitals to contain
costs, reduce waste, and maintain their high standard of patient care.
The hospitals are seeing on average 2-3 times greater savings with Sterilmed than they were
with other reprocessors.
Managing a reprocessing program takes dedicated resources. This sets Sterilmed apart from
standard reprocessors. Sterilmed’s on-sight technician becomes an extension of the facility
team as a partner, not just a supplier.
There’s really no finish line in what we do cause there’s continuously changing staff
within a hospital, certainly continuously changing situations and opinions within a
hospital.
Darren Wennen, VP marketing & Business Development: The processes that we put together really
been time tested over the years to improve the savings in a hospital.
Thanks again Josh.
