The First 4,000 Words is a supplementary
multimedia program used for teaching the meanings of the four thousand most
frequently used English words to students in grades one through four.
The First 4,000 Words program is research-based, the words used in the
program are based on the work from the Educator's Word Frequency Guide and the
Word Zones corpus.
This supplementary program, which requires little teacher time beyond
initial testing,
uses iterative diagnostics
to identify just which words each student needs to learn
and will individualize instruction
to maximize instructional time.
The system has four major components,
two teacher administered vocabulary tests to determine initial student placement,
three hundred and fifty-five web-based lessons,
an administrative website for student management and reporting,
and a Teacher's Manual.
The vocabulary tests have been field- tested.
Each has been proven to be reliable and valid.
The tests assess both listening vocabulary and reading vocabulary.

When students begin the program, they are first introduced to the learning
environment called the Vocabitat.
The Vocabitat includes eight levels, each level has a woodland helper character that
guides the student through their lessons.
Speech recognition technology is used to assess students' knowledge of the words.
Students learn the words in three interactive oral reading lessons.
Following the initial introduction, students are engaged through multiple
game-like activities that reinforce vocabulary learning.
The First 4,000 Words program allows the teacher to track and
monitor student progress.
