Take 2... Okay. I don't like using Criterion, because I feel that it catches a lot of errors
that aren't really errors according to APA format. Um. For instance, in my reports, I
have to use the word "locus of control" a lot because it's, um, something I'm measuring,
and its relationship to optimism. And, the word "locus" isn't used in a lot of conversations,
so it gives me 53 errors saying that I used a word that doesn't exist when it really does.
And, then, um, a lot of last names, if they're not spelled correctly, or they're not like
Wilson or Thompson, or something that is not common, then it'll flag all of those words
as well, so I'll have like 53 errors for names and locus of control or other social constructs
or cognitive contructs that I have to use. And, then, um, or different variations of
the words, as well, that I have to use. Um,can't think of an exact example, but there's a whole
bunch of different variations that are used in psychological talk, I guess you could say.
And, um, it doesn't catch... it catches those words and doesn't... um, those words aren't,
used I guess you could say. So, it flags those words. It also catches a lot of punctuation
errors, um, that I had to use in APA format as far as reporting statistics or something
like that. There'll be like .05 or .01 and then it will say that I used misplace periods
and stuff like that. So, it's not APA friendly at all. And, um, I think it's helped me a
couple of times, maybe with a couple of run-on sentences, but aside from that it hasn't been
very helpful at all. Um, it's typically the last thing I do right before I turn in my
paper and I turn it in, I look through every single error and they're all... I mean, I'm
not going to say my writing is perfect, 'cause it's not, but... they'll be just a couple
things as far as, oh, I need to insert a period or I need to put a comma, or something like
that. But, aside from that, it has not been helpful, and I feel like it's a waste of money.
I feel that, um, at this level people already know how to write because we go through a
lot of these things. I think maybe starting out it might be a good thing, um maybe, but
I don't think it's worth the money, and I don't think we should be using it.
