In this example we're going to work
between the metric and US system and let's see if we can use
a regular conversion process to do that. I want to express
5 milliliters in terms of cups. I'm going to write 5ml
over 1, and then I'm going to see how I can transition.
I see a relationship between liters and quarts, so if I can get to
liters somehow, from milliliters to liters,
then I can use the conversion that 1 liter
is 1.1
quarts, and
I also know from my US conversions
that one quart is
for cups. So let's see about this piece
right here. From my metric system
charts I know that liters is the base unit
and milliliters is three places to the right. That means that 1 liter
is 1000 milliliters so there's a conversion that I can use. So
1 liter is 1000 Milliliters
so if I multiply here, I have 5 times 1.1
times 4 divided by
1000 so that gives me
22 divided by 1000
which gives me
.022 and that is cups
because all of my units will
cancel here. So 5 milliliters
then is .022 cups
