We're here this morning at the sixth annual Anchors Aweigh relay challenge
We're going to see Toronto EMS, Toronto Fire, Toronto Police, and the RCMP
compete for bragging rights
and a donation to their favourite charity,
in this annual relay event, hosted by the
Toronto International Boat Show.
They're going to carry a ten kilogram anchor
through the icy waters that have just recently been pumped into the Ricoh
Coliseum from Lake Ontario.
And speaking of icy waters,
Let's listen to some of the winter water safety tips that Toronto EMS
paramedics have to share with us today.
Just to remind everybody that there's really no safe ice,
... no safe ice to go on 'cause anybody can fall through ice.
Just dress appropriately for the weather: hats
layers - lots of layers - and
head inside and get warmed up if you're starting to feel cold.
Playing hockey on the ice is not an option. We have great
outdoor rinks in the city.
So send the kids to the rink and keep them off the ice.
Be mindful of your pets as well, A big call volume we get it is
pets falling into the ice or getting into trouble.
They typically self-rescue, or if you don't think that's possible, then call the
emergency services, the trained professionals. Don't go on the ice after
your pet.
I feel really good. I think we did a great performance here.
All our guys gave it their all, and
we moved pretty quick.
Did anybody time the race? What was the time?
I don't know the time: I was still shivering when I got out.
[laughter]
They did an incredible job. I'm so proud of them!
It's a great day, you know even though we competed against our
partners in emergency services here, we still work as a team when we get out on
the road. But for today I think these guys did an absolutely tremendous job.
That water is freezing cold!
