even know we're Catholic university we do have a ton of religions
represented here and
you know one other ways we come together is through community service
not only are we a diverse school we encourage
and promote having also sorts of different points of view
I remember my roommate telling me about this event she went to
it was about Vincentionism and what does it mean to be a Vincention
and there were all these people wearing shirts that said, "I'm a Muslim but I 'm a Vincention Muslim"
To be Vincentian means to live the kind of values that Saint Vincent DePaul
lived -- he's our namesake and he was one of the first to leave the convents and
monasteries and work with people.
So service to others, community that's all
the values that DePaul Universitie is founded on
UMIN stands for University Ministry and its a
student resource on campus that's for anyone who is interested in growing spiritually
learning about other faith traditions. Within University ministry in addition
to all the different
student religious organizations there's a lot of service
We have community service day and Vincention service days where the entire school
gathers somewhere they each get divided up and shipped off to
somewhere in the city to do some type of community service
during spring break and winter break students can go
to somewhere throughout the country and work with other students doing service
I went on a service trip with a university ministry and we went to LA
We helped out with soup kitchens and those things but just being there
and talking with people and seeing the kind of conditions they are living in and
just talk with them and get that... kinda their own experience
it just makes you more mature, kinda makes you grow as a person
DePaul is a place where doing community service,
helping others and generally making a difference in people's lives
is a really common thing to do as just part of the culture here
