Hello and welcome to Cupcake Addiction's Despicable Me Minions Cakepop Tutorial where I'll be
showing you how to make this gorgeous and much requested Despicable Me minions cakepop.
Tools and equipment that we will be using today:
I'm using a polystyrene block just to dry and display my cakepops.
I've got a zip lock bag. A pair of scissors.
A lollipop stick. Some greaseproof or baking paper.
I've got a cakepop ball. Now this is pre-rolled ready to go. If you don't have a great recipe
for getting your cakepops to this consistency ready to decorate, I will leave a link to
our tutorial in the description box below. And this one is about ¾ the size of a normal
cakepop ball so it's just a little smaller than what we would normally work with.
I've got some melted black candy melts. I've got some blue and yellow chocolate. Now
I've chosen to tint some white chocolate using either powdered color or color paste. Otherwise
you can use candy melts. I've got a little spoon.
I've got brown M&Ms, both regular-sized and mini.
And I've got some of these little candies. Now these are actually candies that come on
candy necklaces and candy bracelets that you buy for the kids and I've just snipped them
off the little elastic and picked out the white ones.
And I've got a little bit of liquorice which is a bit of an optional extra.
Let's get started. Now the first thing that we want to do is
make our shape for our minions. So it's as easy as taking your slightly smaller than
average ball there and just rolling it into a bit of a sausage-y looking shape there.
So just round off the edges to make sure they're nice and round and you're happy with the look
that it's going to be sort of minion-isque. But you should have something that looks like
that. Pop that one into the fridge for about 10 minutes so that it's really nice and firm.
And I've pre-refrigerated this one just for time's sake so that we can keep moving with
our tutorial. So one's that one comes out of the fridge,
you want to take your ball, not [on] to stick this stage. So you just want to take the ball
in your fingers and you want to dip it into that blue chocolate about a third of the way
up. That's going to be his pants. So just dip it in. Be careful not to drop it. Pull
it out. And taking your lollipop stick, dip that into some of that chocolate. And we're
just going to insert it into the bottom of our minion.
Now the reason that we've refrigerated that so that it's really nice and firm so when
you do insert it, you're not going to push it out of shape. Just tapping off any excess
there. And if you have managed to push it out of shape a little bit, you can just use
your fingers just to regain your shape. Now before that one sets too much, I want
to stick on the 2 feet. So I'm going to take 2 of those large brown M&Ms and I'm just going
to stick them up unto that nice, wet, blue chocolate to make our little minion's feet.
He's going to go off into that polystyrene block where he's going to dry. And when he's
dry, we'll be back to do the yellow coating. While we're waiting for him to dry, we can
make our hair. So for the hair, you've got a couple of different
ways that the hair for the minions can be done. I've got this one here where you can
see I've just used black candy melts and I've given him sort of a bit of a thinning hair
part. Otherwise, we've got our other great little guy and he's got the nice, spiky minion's
hair. So I'm going to show you how to do the spiky.
We're just going to take a simple as a little bit of that liquorice strap, cut it across,
and cut it in half. So you just want to get 2 or 3 sort of little pieces that looks like
that. And we're going to stick them in fat side down so that the thinner side or the
thinner edge of it is actually sticking up. So that's how you do that sort of a hair.
Otherwise, as I mentioned, the other ones just going to be a little bit of piping detail.
Alright, so I'm happy that my minion pants are nice and dry to touch. So what we're going
to do is take that yellow chocolate. I'm just going to give it a few taps and that's just
to give it a nice levelness so that it's going to meet up with those minion pants. So you're
going to dip him in and you really want to bring that chocolate to just on that line.
So I like to sort of put him in and then when I see it meet up on white side. Kind of turn
the cup so that you can sure he's meeting up on all those sides and you can even give
him a little twist if you like. Make sure that you can see any of that cakepop peaking
through. And then we're just going to tap off any excess.
Alright, now while your minion's still wet, I am going to take the eye. Now we'll be showing
you how to make this in just a moment. But while that's still wet, you want to take either
one or 2 eyes depending on the type of minion that you're making. This one's going to have
two. And stick them into that wet chocolate. So we're going to pop him off to the side
once again to continue drying and I'll show you how to do some of those details.
You want to take your black candy melt and your spoon. Open up your zip lock bag and
we're just going to spoon in. Give it a nice stir just to make sure it's as fluid as possible
with you candy melts. I always like to add a little bit of Copha or Crisco or shortening
to my candy melts. I add about 20 grams. It's a solidified vegetable fat. But it just helps
to thin it out. So I add about 20 grams per 100 grams of candy melt because they're quite
a bit thicker or about 20 grams per 300 grams of white or dark chocolate. So a little tip
if you're finding your candy melts are a bit thick. So sealing up that bag, pushing that
candy melt down to the end and you just want to snip off just a nice, small, little corner.
So that's just going to fashion it into a bit of a fine piping bag. I'm going to cut
a tiny tiny bit more than that. So you can have a little practice with that
on the bench if you like, just dragging along. So whenever I pipe, I attach, I lift the bag,
and then I reattach. Give it a few little sort of squeezes to make sure that it's not
going to have any blockages in there. So to make your eyes, take 2 or 1 depending
on how many you want and just put down a nice little blob. So I like to do both blobs at
the same time so that I know they're about the same size. The blob's about the same size
as the eye. And then take one of those eyes and just sit it in, push it down and that
gives you that nice little black outline and a nice little black pupil. Alright, so I'm just going to take my little
minion who is now dry. And we want to start by doing his little, I guess, his glass's
band. So once again just getting my self started there. So put a tiny tiny little dot in between
his glasses to join them together. And then I find it easiest to do one side, the other
side and then the back of his glasses so that it's nice and even. So starting... You just
want to rest your hand on the table for a bit more stability, starting just behind the
glasses here. We're going to do a nice line to about there. Then urn him over and come
around the other side. A nice line. And then you can turn him around the back and just
meet those 2 lines up. Alright, so there you've got your nice little glasses all sitting on
there. Now I also gave him just a couple of little
dots for his overalls -- so just 1 and 2, sort of like little buttons, and then just
the third little bit of detailing just down here on his pants, either a circle or just
little dollop. With those ones, if you do get a little bit of a pointy tip on them,
just take your finger while it's still wet and just knock that pointed tip off just so
you don't have the little pole mark where the bags pick up.
Alright, so you want to take a little bit more of that black candy melt now and we're
just going to put little dollop here with a mini-M&M for one of our minion's hand. And
then turning him over, same again on this side.

hopefully you'll find something that you like. So just have a little look at him front on,
make sure that you're happy that he's all looking pretty even. Now, for the mouth, there
are so many different expressions, different sort of hair that you can do for these guys.
We've got out sticky [yappy] hair. So if you want to do the stick [yappy] hair, you need
to put that in while your yellow candy melt is still wet. So when we put those eyes on,
you would also stick on your 3 strands of hair.
For this hair here, you can see it's just 4 little lines on either side. And this guy
for me is going to have just a little bit of a 2 strand comb over, I think, because
I want my minions to all be a little bit individual. So just taking him, I'm just going to attach
the chocolate and just [comb] it over. Alright, so lastly we just want to add his
mouth. You can do a smile. You can do a frown. You can do a bit of (Inaudible 09:39), whatever
you like. This is where you can give your minion a little bit of personality. So I'm
just going to give him just a classic smile. So just taking that zip lock bag... and around
into a lovely little smile. Alright, so he's got his little smile and
he's pretty well-finished. But we just want to add his little arms. It's a bit of an optional
extra. If you want them, you can have them. Dip a cocktail stick or another lollipop stick
into that candy melt. And we're just going to put just sort of a little long dollop.
He [won't] really look like anything but when you see them all fixed up and all done, they
do actually look like little arms. So just coming down there, you can see to meet up
with that M&M. And the last you want to do is just take off any sort of a high lift or
a high drop point on either side. So you kind of almost kind of smooth them down to his
little body. There you have your gorgeous little Despicable
Me minions cakepop, ready to go for your next event. We hope that you've enjoyed watching
this tutorial as much as I've enjoyed making it for you and as always, thank you very much
for watching.
