SaskPower Gas Inspector Jim Filteau says before flooding starts, homeowners should take a
few precautions to prepare their property.
Jim Filteau, Gas Inspector: "We recommend you get a hold of a licensed gas contractor
for the province of Saskatchewan and they can disconnect and remove any gas appliances
and put them in a safe location so they can be reinstalled at a later date. As a homeowner
you should not attempt to disconnect any gas lines yourself."
Jim Filteau, Gas Inspector: "If you have portable propane cylinders...you can secure them to
something solid with a chain or a wire cable so that they don't start floating around and
becoming a dangerous piece of equipment that's in the water."
Jim Filteau, Gas Inspector: "If you have larger tank applications... you could ask the propane
company to remove that tank and put it in a safe location."
During Flooding
Call SaskEnergy to shut off your natural gas service if water is entering your basement.
Propane is a different matter.
Jim Filteau, Gas Inspector: "As a homeowner you can shut off the propane tanks yourself.
Just make sure there's no fuel in the lines."
Filteau also notes there are specific guidelines for providing temporary heat to your home.
Jim Filteau, Gas Inspector: "Gas ranges, barbecues or portable construction heaters...are not
certified or designed to be a source of heat. They can actually cause conditions where you
have dangerous carbon monoxide levels develop in the home. . If you do have to have a construction
heater or a portable heater that is certified for space heating, it should be in a well-ventilated
area, and the building should never be occupied by people that are in those conditions."
After Flooding
Once water recedes, Filteau recommends homeowners hire a licensed gas contractor to inspect
and, if necessary, service gas appliances.
Jim Filteau, Gas Inspector: "If any gas appliances have been removed or deemed unsafe because
of floodwater conditions, they cannot be resold or reused."
Jim Filteau, Gas Inspector: "If you didn't experience any flood problems and yet your
gas service was turned off... get a hold of your SaskPower gas inspector and he'll guide
you through what steps you need to take to get either your natural gas or your propane
back."
