Hey Guys it's Kevin with MixCoach, Time for another episode of the MixCoach Minute
brought to you by
makes coach member a great membership website where you can learn to mix all
different kinds of styles
music and get to hang out with the coolest kids in school
'em I had a member-owned makes catch me would ask me a question it was a great
question
for now discovered in this episode the make such minute he was
a enquiring about no workflow when I use
ATM mastering plugin like ozone if I use it on the master bus while I'm mixing or
if a pop it on after
after we're done he has seen cinema tutorial
videos up it on makes coach member every
about every week or so 'em and
in this is what I told him in a nut shell basically
I import I have a makes template that I use and that template has mount preset
that I use an ozone so there's nothing
really fancy there it's a is basically the limiter it's a multi-band compressor
a little bit of EQ
and that's about its a. limiter
in in this order EQ which is just very gentle
the I'll high pass filter maybe a little bump to the top end
not much 1 or 2 db maybe
'em and then it goes to a multi-bank compressor this just to contain the low end
Indian there's a limiter and it's barely working
it's mainly just to catch the am the peaks
and what he was asking
is if I used at as I'm mixing
or if I pop it in at the last minute my and it may be really start thinking
about this
I almost always import my settings with a preset in there
yeah all about buses are set up and
I will EQ snare, kick, guitars
vocals things like that out you tweak my verbs a little bit
I have things going through buses preset buses that are
then going out other buses and you'll see this if your on MixCoach Member
but are I usually mix through those presets
including the one on ozone and I was you know ask a massive wanna do that
in the years the reason I came up with. when you're mixing
'em he said he was having problems with
when the pops 's ozone in the air din thing started distorting
and i was thinkin that's the reason I don't do it is because I don't be
surprised at the last minute
by adding a plug in at the last minute and then be in surprised
'em that it is distorted
but the problem is here ... when you could imagine playing in
after you finish mixing your
your ears will tell you that the mix is louder
the mix will be lower but you should tell you that whatever is loudest
is best in this not necessarily the case
so you let your ears will be overwhelmed by "wow this make sense so much louder"
and you will bypass or your ears was kinda almost
on not pay attention to the fact that there's some distortion happening now
because there's so much louder you're just impressed with yourself
you overlooked a distortion so that's why I always makes through my mastering
plugins.. because
I don't want to be surprised in a in effect put something to court
and it distorts I wanna know it right there while my ears are used to not
hearing
distortion and at the same volume so
your ears will trick you sometimes don't tell you that whatever's loudest
is best and it's not necessarily the case so makes through
my mastering plugins
hope this helps you and I hope that maybe you can use only this advice
in some of your workflows. Don't let your ears deceive you into thinking that was loudest is
best
is not necessarily the case so this has been an episode of the MixCoach Minute
hope that little tidbit helps you if you wanna come in check out our cool
