I'm John Sutton. I'm an electric bass player and an acoustic bass player from Chicago.
My passion is playing music and I'm into everybody making art that they really want to make.
I've been playing electric bass for about 18 years. It's something that I got started
with when I was a kid. Um, playing with the rock band in my neighborhood, that was some
of my best friends. We already had a guitar player, so I well, I'll play bass 'til the
guitar player quits. I bought a bass, started playing it and immediately knew that I loved
playing it and probably liked it more than I would ever like guitar. I was in Chicago,
so there was a lot of opportunities to play blues and jazz. I went to a, a college for
music at Lawrence University, studied orchestral bass, and all kinds of classical music, to
be an honest player. My passion for teaching comes from trying to teach people how to focus
their ear-based playing and that doesn't have to be some kind of academic ordeal. Using
your ears or using your computer, put some music tracks on it, or YouTube or whatever
you're going to use, that you can learn music just with the resources that you have right
around you. I teach group lessons in Chicago. I'm in a program that teaches math and reading
through music, so we use music as a tool in the curriculum to try to teach people who
need extra help. I feel really lucky to have had the experience that I've had. I've gotten
to play with tons of world class musicians and I've played at some of the best music
halls in the world, like Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, lots of music festivals. Played in
Europe and all over the place. My name is John Sutton and I'm here to teach you how
to play the bass.
