Unit 4: If human rights are wrong, we don’t want to be right.
“All men are created equal.”
How’s that for a can of worms? Kinda vague, don’t you think?
“All men”… so, are women not included?
What about men of other races, who haven’t always been considered “people?”
Okay, so the immortal words had been written into the Constitution…
…but now it was going to take a couple of hundred years – or more – to interpret
precisely what they mean.
Ah well. Should make for an interesting national history, anyway.
And it’s pretty much what this unit is all about.
We’re going to delve into women’s suffrage…
…which wasn’t a bad thing, despite how it sounds.
In fact, women today wouldn’t be able to vote otherwise…
…let alone run for President…
…or even give away free cars on television. The slavery debate raged on…
…and would eventually lead to the Civil War.
But in the meantime, a large percentage of our population was certainly not treated equally.
Unless picking cotton was just something people… loved to do back then.
You’ll learn about everything from The Underground Railroad…
…which wasn’t really a subway, and yet was even more dangerous…
…to the Trail of Tears, a sad depiction of displaced American Indians.
Well, we’ll always have that first Thanksgiving. Of course, we still haven’t all been able
to get on the same page about everything… … but hopefully we’re getting closer.
Until we get it figured out though…
…we’ll just keep that wording
in pencil.
