Rants are likely the most time-consuming and rewarding videos that I can make. I have made
five so far, all similar in style. However, they were part of a series, being
released 5 years, months, weeks and then days apart. Now, a new era of rants has begun!
I start off by typing up the script, normally weeks or months in advance. An idea comes
to me and I go WOW that would go well in a rant! Then I go horribly off-topic and the
rant changes into something else. Once it's all cooled off and settled I finalise the
script and then wait until I can be BOTHERED to make it.
I tend to start the next stage between 2-7 days before the release. I record the audio.
The length tends to come amazingly close to 5 minutes every time. I keep promising myself
that I'll make shorter ones but it never happens! In this case, this video was 5 minutes 8 seconds
and I had to sacrifice a small bit about, well, I'll just show you:
Not that I'm at that stage yet, but I can understand it. Heck, I made my first rant
video when I was 18 and now I've just turned 24 and I've gone from moaning about irritating
video-gamers to questioning the point of life itself! Where will I be when I'm 30?!...
The next stage is adding images. This was a horrible process, where anything that covered
more than a couple of seconds was a relief to me when making it, but wouldn't be as fun
to watch through. I thought I'd save time and potential copyright infringement if I
stuck to words in this one. It would also help people to follow the video,
since people said that they were struggling. Little did I know that it would be even more
time-consuming! It probably took between 10 and 15 hours to edit all 1,600 words together,
then to position and to time them on the screen properly.
Finally I had to think about the background. All the way through the project I had a simple
blue to orange gradient. This almost remained, but then I had the simple and great idea of
actually doing something with it. I mean, people watch videos for the video as well
as the audio! At first the blue and orange would fight amongst
themselves, but it didn't represent the video's content and current theme that well so I was
like SCREW IT and added lots of different colours and made it dance between them like
a slow-paced nightclub. Finally I added music. I was hesitant about
adding a slowed-down, morbid sounding version of the song I ended up choosing (Superhero
from my Audio Crime album). I was told by friends who previewed the video that it fitted,
so I stuck with it. I think it makes the video sound fuller and more meaningful than silence
as I've had before. Finally I could distance myself from Zero Punctuation, which I have
been accused of copying far too many times. That, combined with the laughing, my hastily-drawn
bit of artwork (that I drew myself to avoid copyright infringement) and the text across
the screen, gives this video a very sinister feeling. I love it.
And finally I rendered it like, 4-5 different times, and found bugs like THESE!
Yes, all these bugs remained despite a 7 hour crunch-mode where I worked until about 5 in
the morning to finish the video for Monday. And finally I made a really pretty custom
thumbnail. I've been doing this a lot recently, it's fun in its own right! I made the background
colours myself to make it stand out, I'm moving away from my normal reliance on blue and orange.
Pink's sooo next year! And then I added lens flare. Seriously.
And there you have it- the making of a rant. Click here to watch it now!
