I'm Mike Daube and I'm director of the Public Health Advocacy Institute and also the McCusker Centre for Action on Alcohol and Youth.
What we're about is prevention - we're about preventing unnecessary death and disease.
Now there are some imminently preventable causes of death and disease.
Alcohol, obesity, tobacco - these are literally the causes of hundreds of thousands of deaths
of Australians now alive if we don't take action. There's a tremendous amount that can be done.
What we're trying to do is to generate the evidence for action then to make sure
that people do take action. The McCusker Centre for Action on Alcohol and Youth, for example.
Everybody's concerned in the community about the trends in terms of young people and drinking.
Kids are drinking. Ever earlier, they're drinking to get drunk. There's a lot of rhetoric about
it, but the problem's getting worse and no one's doing anything about it. So our role
there is to generate action that will result in changes and that with alcohol as with other
areas we'll make tomorrow better by ensuring that we don't have all those alcohol-related
problems for years to come.
