MAIRA KALMAN: Half the time, I don't know what's going on, but I love it.
[Music]
Finally, I'm reading Proust and I'm not pretending to read, I'm really reading and it is the
most beautiful thing. It fills me with fantastic joy, even though half the time, truly I don't
know what's going on, but I love it. Madly. I'm having a love affair with trees. WHat
I like to do is I like to—in the ideal world, I would walk around the world and do paintings
of trees which I think is an honorable occupation. When I teach my next design class, we're not
going to do any designing at all. We're going to dance. I'm going to hire a dancer and we're
going to do a dance and it'll have music and movement and that's all you need in a design
class. Glen Gould playing the Goldberg Variations is one of the celestial things on this Earth.
The performance that I have has him there stopping and they are talking about the take
and they're redoing it and discussing it and it's so gorgeous because they're just trying
to get this infinitesimal—infinitesimal moment right and sublime and they do. Lately
I've been thinking a lot about the Pavlova, which is a meringue desert with cream and
fruit and then I think about Anna Pavlova and and I think of this meringue and I think
of how you feel, like how one wishes to be taken away to a cloud and everything being
lovely and fluffy. That's the pavlova.
