Good morning friends, breeders and fans of the Bull Terrier.
In this opportunity we are visiting the home of our friend Humberto Lara, whom has recive us with hospitality.
And we are going to have a little interview with him to tell us about his experience of many year in the Bull Terrier breed.
As we well know, he has been since the decade of 80's and has been the only latin who won the Silverwood in the year of 1999.
Hi, how are you Humberto?
Hi Roger, good morning?
Tell us, when you start with the breed?
I start with my first dog of show, that I bought in the year of 1985.
And in 1986 I had my first litter.
And also since that year I started to participate at the US.
It was my first year attending to the Silverwood, that that year was in Calgary, Canada.
What was it that got your attention to choose this breed?
From the beginning I was attracted by the personality of the dogs.
The portrait of a powerful dog.
But at same time is a very noble dog with other animals and with the people.
So that was the thing that attracted me most. It is a dog with a good temperament at least majority. And the same time there seems very strong.
Tell us about your most important achievements with the breed.
Well look, I had the luck of having many American Champions, International, obviously many Mexican Champions, because we compete here very often.
And I had many Silverwood finalists, that is an important achievement, because the level in the US is to high.
How many finalists have you had?
Well I had Jason who was finalist during three years in a row in the period of '91, '92 and '93.
I had Atila who was finalist in 1997.
I had Beautiful Boy a white dog who was finalist too in 1999.
And Carlitos that was finalist in 1999 and won the Silverwood.
So I have the pride that has been dogs of my breeder and has been born in Mexico.
How you see the evolve of the breed since the last three decades, 80's 90's and current?
I think that actually exist Bulls more entire than before.
One time I see at the US that they work a lot with the heads.
With the "Downface", the exagerate heads and exagerated profiles.
Then with the tails, the backs, the angles.
About the bites there was a period of crisis with the bites in the breed.
But lately at the end of the 90's and beginning of this decade the dogs had been supplemented and balanced very well.
I have been breed dogs very balanced, good heads, bites and bodies, very competitive dogs.
And the fact is that has been winners dogs of Best in Show, like Rufus, we already know him.
He won the Westminster Best in Show in New York.
So is a very complete dog, almost near to perfection.
And there is a great evolve of the breed in the last years.
You that had been in the last years and of course you had been in many Silverwoods.
Two years ago you went to the Trophies.
And you could attend for many years the american dog evolving.
And you could see the british dog.
Tell us, what is the difference, what you like or dislike and caugth your attention of each one of these dogs.
Well, I see very even the work of the british and the americans.
British have bigger dogs with much bone, stronger and taller.
Like the dogs that are producing Chris Kilpatrick.
That came all from Barracuda.
Are taller dogs, very well balanced, with very good backs and angles.
So that is the difference in what I am watching actually.
And the american dogs always been characterized for great heads and profiles.
That is a characteristic that the american and canadian dogs with greatest heads.
And I think that is probably the difference between the british dog and the american dog.
The British always been worried more about the structure of the bodies of the dogs.
But I see very even the level between of British and Americans.
We are talking about Major Ligues, with those countries.
Sure.
Let's talk a bit about the judgement, that is a subject very discussed.
What do you think about the way of judgement of an all breed judge than a breeder judge?
Well, a breeder judge knows perfectly the breed, since the pups are growing.
Then, he can advice more accurately of the characteristics of its legs, steps, heads, tails.
And obviously he done with more love to the breed, more passion.
The judges of all breeds came and most of time and meet commitment of been judging one breed and other and another.
There is a moment that they don't, look the characteristics of a Bull Terrier.
At least that the breed likes them, but if they don't like, they judge us very bad.
In terms of your dogs and its puppies.
How do you think that have contributed to the upbringing and development of the breed in Mexico?
Well, I have been fortunate that I have given studs from Magor, Gordon and Norma Smith.
Franiee Berez from Action Bull Terriers, she given to me many studs for many years.
Then all those lines from Magor that are canadian and from Action are in my dogs.
Else Victoria Corse from Corsaire, contribute a lot given to Gryphon.
So, all those american and canadian lines, are greatly influenced in Mexico since the 90's.
And lately many people had brought dogs from Europe.
And more or less are currently balanced between british and american lines.
For example we are lucky to have "Boom Boom" that is a breed of yours.
With british genetics and he will contribute a lot with the breed in Mexico.
As for the specialty of Buenos Aires.
That will be in August 15th.
A week ago I was visiting who will be one of the judges, our friend Andreu from Lord Bull.
And I know that you has also been invited by the committee chaired by Javier Peraccini.
To be one of the judges at the specialty. What do you expect to see in Buenos Aires?
It is very interesting...
Thanks for the inivtation to all the Argentine Breeders...
It is very interesting; I repeat, attend the specialty and judge there.
Because I see that in Argentina there's a passion for the Bull Terrier since many years ago.
And I have much interest in knowing the dogs that they are showing, the evolve of the breed in that country.
And it is good that in Latinamerica is growing up that passion and that adiction, as I call, to our breed.
Well, thank you very much Humberto.
And thank you friends.
And I hope to see you at Buenos Aires, Argentina in August. Thank You.
Thank You.
