Hey there.
Welcome to BrainStuff.
I'm Jonathan Strickland.
And the question I have today is why is it
that I can play some DVDs as Blu-rays on certain machines
I own, but other DVDs and Blue-rays won't play at all?
It's a good question.
It all comes down to something called region locking
and region codes.
You see, every DVD and Blu-ray that's authorized
has a region code associated with it.
And DVD and Blu-ray players have region codes
associated with them.
So a DVD player and a Blu-ray player
will only play the media that matches
the region code of that player.
All other media with other region codes won't play at all.
So why is that?
Well, it helps movie studios, and video game companies,
other media producers control when and where
their content can be viewed.
Now, movies can be released on different dates
all around the world, and region locking helps control that.
So what are the regions?
Well, region one is the United States and Canada.
Region two, that's Europe and Japan.
Region three is Southeast Asia.
Region four would be Latin America and Australia.
Region five is Russia, the rest of Asia and Africa.
But region six is China.
And region seven is-- oh, there is no region seven.
Right.
So in order for you to be able to enjoy these movies,
you have to have a player that is also the same code
as the film's.
Unless you happen to have a region free player-- in which
case, movie night at your house.
