Lazy Boy has just released his debut self-titled record
and that's what we'll be talking about with Eduardo Bouças.
— Hello, Eduardo. How are you? — I'm good. — Welcome!
Lazy Boy, so, is this a characteristic of yours? Are you a lazy little boy?
Yes. Unfortunately, yes.
How did this project happen? This is fairly recent, isn't it?
Yes, this project was born in 2010
by then I already had some projects where I composed and wrote
and, at the same time, I was building up a set of more personal songs, almost like a diary.
— Some treasures, at home... — Exactly.
They weren't supposed to see daylight, but later on the idea came up to bring them on the road
and to show them to people. — But did anyone need to convince you to do that?
— Yes. — When you write something that personal, sometimes it's hard to share it
I used to show the songs to my closest friends and listen to their opinions
— some of them positive, others less positive —
And those opinions drove me to show my songs to people and that's how the project was born.
And you got together with two friends, right?
Yes. At first, the idea was to have a one man show,
but then I ended up getting together with two good friends, Ricardo and Miguel,
with whom I use to play, and they helped me to take the project on the road
they also shaped it, and they have been with me since then, since that time.
You started by taking some of your songs, and some covers as well, and playing around the North [of Portugal]
How did the opportunity to make this record came up? It's an interesting story, isn't it?
Yeah, it all happened very quickly
I think I got to a point where I figured out, due to a number of reasons,
that it was the perfect time to make the record or, if it wasn't happening at that time,
it would be very hard to do it
because of people's availability and other factors
But, the truth is, in a matter of 2 or 3 weeks, we made all the plans
and we figured out the whole thing... — The quickest album ever. — Exactly.
— But you didn't go to a studio... — No.
We wanted to make the record as close to home as possible, so we didn't go through much hassle...
— There it is, Lazy Boy. Lazy Boy in action. — We ended up making it at home.
It was fun, because we had the idea of making the record at home
because that's where the songs were born
and we thought that it would be a much more interesting experience
and the final result would be more natural and organic if we recorded them
at the same place, with the same ambience, as they were born.
— Sure, it's the same space and the same feeling... — Exactly.
And it was a very interesting experience. We rented some equipment
and we transformed my living room into a semi-professional studio
and we had a crazy couple of weeks. Absolutely crazy.
— Locked at home? — Yes.
And it was a great experience. — That's very cool.
For those who didn't have the chance to listen to your music
how would you define your sound? Do you always sing in English, do you also sing in Portuguese?
I sing in English.
How can I define it? I think it's a very personal style.
Of course I have my influences and maybe I can't even tell which artists inspire me
It's something really personal, really almost like writing a diary
These are my thoughts in the form of songs.
— And they're really good, I must say. I really enjoyed it. — Thank you very much.
So, where are you going to be promoting? You already did the presentation of the album,
where are you going to be playing? Do you have any gigs?
At the time, there is nothing
because, by the way, I must say that this project is following some unusual procedure
we did this record without involving any record label or promoter or distributor,
we're doing everything ourselves and so, my presence here,
and I'm really thankful to CC, is a way to show my music to as many people as possible
— But the record is available online, right? — The record is available online...
— Everyone pays what they want, which is something different as well... — Exactly.
The record is available online and people can download it, as you said, for the price they want
Even for 0 Euros, if they feel so,
— That's not fair, Eduardo...
— Well... — There should be some kind of minimum...
— That's for the digital version and the physical version, this disc,
is available for 5 Euros.
So, if we go to your Facebook, is it easy to get in touch with you?
Someone at home that is interested in your music... — Yes, yes.
